This race boat was equipped with a 4" Lakewood professional waist belt set up with single lever quick release safety buckle. The round and round racers that were hurt in those days were the ones that were ejected from the seat in an accident. Being secured in the boat was IMO much safer.
During a race at the Okeechobee Buckhead Ridge Race Track I was trying to run down Alan Gaffney for the Top Eliminator win. I caught Alan in the first turn on about the third or fourth lap but at high speed going thru the turn my boat caught his wake, the front end sucked down, then launched up and out of the water flipping end over end about ten times, off the race track across dry ground, and landed in upside down in a deep canal. The safety crew got there quick, dove down, found and free'd me from the seat belts, and got me out safely. Thanks to those guys. I think Alan won the TE race that day.
