Re: Riding in South Florida

Looks like a warp drive, no big deal, can run without it unless major vibration is present.
Gus Guell is the man,,, he apprenticed under my father at air carrier engine service and then aerothrust, lots of memories.

Re: Igso 540 question

There is a spool kit for them but you will need to go electronic ignition, I'd suggest leave the gear on it, as it helps get the rpm higher to produce correct boost pressures otherwise it will be a slug.

The stock 220 camshaft if part number ends in 878 is same as e185-225, they perform very well with a smooth idle.

Re: build whith chevy 250ci

What resources do you have at your convenience, do you have access to a large 14' press brake with lower v block and upper cylindrical die? Or a local fabricator with said press brake? If so, begin sourcing sheet aluminum, I suggest 6061-T6 for strength in a softer alloy that is weldable, also sourc...

Re: 220 bogs and loses power at wide open throttle.

Pull fuel inlet adapter off the bowl, remove sintered bronze filter and spring and throw them away. If none present then be sure of tank vent clear of debris, also depending on electric pump type, it may or may not allow full free flow when off, and it may have a screen that is clogged.

You can slow down consumption and blowby a bit by running some Lucas oil stabilizer in it.

Re: 0470 blow-by / leak down

Leakdown and compression tests give you a note on which cylinder is out of balance with the others that are stable, by reading your diagnostic numbers it isn't too far off to be worried about it, oil consumption or high oil temperature would be of concern to make an overhaul decision, connies huff a...

Re: New rings. Still smoking

Simply rotate till each valve opens about 1/8'' and pry on retainer in direction inline with rocker, any movement over .005" will tell you if guides are toast.

Re: I have a question

John, I've seen two true 170 HP (O-340) engines . Bore 5.1250 Stroke 4.125 Lew Ingle from Inverness owned both. To the best of my knowledge he still had one in his shop when he passed away. I probably have a copy of a parts catalogue for one around here somewhere if you need one. Thank you very muc...

Re: New rings. Still smoking

Simply check guide wear by pulling covers, get valves to just open and use a prybar to move stem inline with rocker axis, if movement is over at least .0020" there is your oil usage. Intake mainly.

Re: New rings. Still smoking

Smoking at idle and on acceleration is most likely due to worn intake valve guides, if you are experiencing high oil temps then i must x2 on ring lands are worn out.

Re: I have a question

Putting angle valve cylinders does help with flow to a certain extent, however they are heavier as well as the pistons, a true 170 hp crankshaft is as rare as hens' teeth, it has a longer stroke than an o320 but also has larger prop dowels, angle valve cylinders on an o360 will not equate to a true ...

Re: V8 continental ground power oil leak

Ok then, it very well could be rings seating in, the puff of smoke could be oil passing by the intake valve guides, if blowby is minimal then don't worry about that, if you clean it and locate the leaks to address.

Re: Cont. 520 mechanical fuel pump

Go with the cylindrical facet pump, they last forever, 1/4" inlet outlet. There is a vane style pump that mounts to the front of the accessory housing opposite of the magnetos, it will need an initial priming at startup, the facet pump will allow it to draw through vs the Holley or other vane p...

Re: V8 continental ground power oil leak

Welcome to the forum and to the addiction, if it is blowing oil out of the breather(s) it is likely worn rings as well as ring lands, a proper leakdown test will determine what cylinders are weak and give you an idea on how far it needs to be repaired, I would suggest a full top overhaul and replace...

Old school used to knurl the skirts to snug them up however if the ring lands are worn the process is moot.
