Updating SA...

Postby rick » Sat Dec 31, 2016 11:06 am

...probably shouldn't even call it an update. It's more like a site rebuild.

Gonna start with the forum within the next few days or so. Not exactly sure what kind of changes to expect in the beginning, but there will definitely be some changes in appearance once I start the update. I'll just keep working on it until we like it again.

This whole updating stuff has to take place because the server is also being updated to keep SA running in a more secure environment. Our older scripts would not function on the updated server and outdated servers & websites get hacked frequently. We've had our share of hacking attempts lately.

One good thing is that the forum will finally be mobile friendly. Personally, I wouldn't have gave 2 cents for "mobile friendly" a few years ago, but these days it's a pretty important thing.

Thanks guys.

The forum has been updated...told you it was gonna be different lol.

We can work on appearance as we go if need be, but right now I want to focus on some other site related stuff including some type of portal like we had before.

Looks like the gallery can't handle the updated forum script. I kind of expected it, but was hoping for the best.

Not exactly sure what to do about it yet...just wanted to say that I am aware of it.

Believe me, I'm not doing this because it's something I want. I've been perfectly happy with the way SA has always been.

I'll keep working on it until we get it back to something we like.

Hey Rick, don't sweat it man. It's like tuning an airboat that developed a hop. You just keep tweaking it 'till it's right.

Thanks glades cat. That's exactly the way I'm trying to approaching it.

Biggest loss right now is the gallery. I haven't been able to spend anytime on that one yet, but it may have to be replaced with a more modern photo gallery script.

New Layout takes some getting used to but looks good.

I agree.

May take a little time, but I think it'll get better as we go.

Posted this from my phone...might be a first for me.

I tried to setup the same portal, but it wouldn't work Robert. It appears the people that wrote that script for the forum have quit updating it, which seems to be a common problem these days.

The workaround for that will the home page: http://www.southernairboat.com
I've been working on that and it shows the active threads like the portal did. When done it'll also show some recent classifieds ads, as well as recent pics from a future gallery setup and hopefully have a little better appearance.

Another workaround would be to bookmark the "Active Topics" page: search.php?search_id=active_topics
That pages shows a bunch of the most recent active topics. You can also find a link to that page by clicking the "Quick links" link above.

ok I'll try the active topics thing

PS: just side note I still have a problem on firefox & chrome with the web page header covering the top 50% of the page like the newest classifieds do , have to scroll stuff to very bottom of the web page to click on topics .

Not sure what would cause that. If you can turn a print screen into an image, I'd like to see it.

Also, I'm in the process of creating a forum "style" that will look almost identical to what we had before. Logged in members can go to their "User Control Panel" to select it. There still won't be a portal page, but by using the active topics link, it'll be as close as we can get it.

If you want to try it, here's a direct link to your control panel: http://www.southernairboat.com/phpBB3/ucp.php?i=165 (link only works if you're logged in)

You would need to select "subsilver2" for the "My board style" option, then click "Submit".

Rick,

Still trying to work my way through the new format. Probably more user friendly once we get familiar with it. It's your site, run it as you wish.

Sorry Ken, had no choice but to update SA due to how things work on the internet.

If you want to get the forum part of SA pretty much back to it's old self, read the post below that I made in the other update thread...

...here's a direct link to your control panel to change it back: http://www.southernairboat.com/phpBB3/ucp.php?i=165 (link only works if you're logged in)

You would need to select "subsilver2" for the "My board style" option, then click "Submit".

As of now, there is still no portal page. However, you can bookmark the active topics link, it'll be as close as we can get it for now.

After you make that selection, the forum will look like it did before the updates. When you log out, it will go back to the new style automatically, but anytime you're logged in, it will go back to the original style automatically.

Keep in mind, the new style is moblie friendly, but original style is not. However, you can go back & forth anytime you want to make the change described above.

If you have any problems making the change, or want me to do it for you, send me a PM: http://www.southernairboat.com/phpBB3/u ... ompose&u=2
