New rings. Still smoking

Postby Jonesy12 » Tue Feb 21, 2017 1:31 am

I just rebuilt my 8 cylinder E series 0470. Chrome rings, steel cylinders that were re honed. Has about 6 hours in it since work was done. Doesnt smoke while it's warming up, once warm, starts to smoke like crazy. It's only smoke when at a idle and when I step on it. It's only burning haft the oil it was before I got the ring job, which is good. But still burning 3-4 quarts per 30 gallons of fuel.
do the rings still need to seat? Is al this normal? Thank you guy in advance. I'm new to air boats.

You check the ring lands on the pistons?

Are you sure the honing restored them from being out of round?

Chrome rings are comparatively hard and not real forgiving.

I had a well know builder install the rings and hone the cylinders. Jd airparts out of Melbourne. The honing was outsourced, i have a copy of the invoice. The boat never smoked at a idle before the new rings were installed, only when throttling up. It just seems a little excess. Maybe the oil is seeping past the rings before they seat? I'm going to install some hotter plugs this weekend, plugs seem to be fouling out.
It only has about 5 hours on it since overhaul.
From what I've read it's normal for these motors to burn some oil. Is it normal with chrome rings to be smoking? I'm going to keep riding it until it gets to 20 hrs and see if they seat.

That be case, then that's good news.

Which material is where, really doesn't matter if they are not round.

Smoking at idle and on acceleration is most likely due to worn intake valve guides, if you are experiencing high oil temps then i must x2 on ring lands are worn out.
I never finish anyth,,,.

Oil temp is staying under 160.

Could it simply be the rings needs to seat? Or I should have the valve guides replaced?

Simply check guide wear by pulling covers, get valves to just open and use a prybar to move stem inline with rocker axis, if movement is over at least .0020" there is your oil usage. Intake mainly.

Simply rotate till each valve opens about 1/8'' and pry on retainer in direction inline with rocker, any movement over .005" will tell you if guides are toast.
I never finish anyth,,,.
