350 dd build

Postby boobidges » Sun Jul 03, 2016 4:11 pm

Looking to build a new dd engine.have 355 small block, stock crank,L98 aluminum heads, holley throttle body fuel injection. Figure to use something like a Baja 2 cam and flat top pistons. Has anyone built something similar? How'd it do? Gonna turn a 72inch questions series on a 13.6 cotton mouth

That's a pretty big hull for a DD SBC, what type of use will it see? I just built a 385ci DD for my Son's 12' Big O (pretty light hull), new poly, spinning a 70" Q and will run dry ok with one person, limited with 2 people. Only advice I can give you is keep your rigging light if you plan on running any dry at all.

Get a gearbox or belt drive it will be worth it.

Dollar for dollar the gear drive is the best value. That said for DD you can't beat a long stroke and cubic inches. I have seen a few fairly stout 400sbc DD on lightly rigged old 13ft boats.

Cam selection would be very low duration, probably RV type cam but anything with slightly more lift than stock would work well. Also a wider LSA tends to help. You don't want a high duration narrow LSA thumper it won't pull where you need it to.

I just built a boat with a 355 sbc. Flat top pistons. Unsure of the cam (thought process was to see how it ran and if it didn't do what I wanted I would swap the cam), 2.02/1.60 heads, edelbrock torker II intake manifold, 600cfm edelbrock carb, billet hei, and nothing else fancy. It's on a tubular steel engine stand with emt seat stand on angle steel rails. 26 gallon tank, one battery, 72x36 woodie, and slick bottom on a 13'6" cottonmouth hull. With no adjustment to engine pitch it ran dry ground with me and my son on it on green grass. Not saying it will burn up dry ground but it did move until I let out of it and would break free on its own.
I built this one as my first ground up build just to do it inexpensively and see what it would take. I'm happy with the turnout.
