Long Journey

Postby digginfool » Wed Mar 01, 2017 8:07 am

Wow. I've been without my DB for a year now. Long story short, the problem with my engine started because of a defective coil pack. The best they can tell it was bad pretty much from day one and that's what caused the damage. To compound matters, the engine arrived at the distributor in the Baton Rouge area three days before the big floods last Spring and my engine went under water. Since they were going to tear my engine down completely, I asked if they would re-assemble with forged components if I supplied them. They agreed and even went so far as to send it to a local speed shop to do the work. Of course, this all takes time because my engine isn't the only one waiting. To compound things, once they began to check the engine out, it was found that several cylinders were out of round so off to the machine room it went for align and cylinder bores. Finally, it's my turn and the engine is going back together. The owner of the engine shop sent me these pictures last night. Can't wait for the barge to hit the water again. Been a long time without it.

Because the coil pack was not firing, unburned fuel washed the cylinder walls and allowed the piston to score the walls. I discovered the issue by pure happenstance. I had an issue with header bolts snapping and pulled the header to see if the flange was warped. When I pulled the header, I saw 3 exhaust ports black with soot and one washed clean and coated with oily residue. Took pictures and sent to Marine Power. After a few weeks of back and forth looking for somebody in Florida to tear into the motor to find out what was going on, they had me remove, crate and send to their facility. It is being covered under warranty.

It's back! About the only outward change you will see is the head studs. All the rest of the goodies are inside. Won't be long now!
