0-470 Mechanic Needed

TSnake

Anyone know any good A/C mechanics in North Florida, preferably within a couple hours of Gainesville? I’ve got an 0-470 GPU that’s rapidly approaching “slap wore out status. At minimum it needs all cylinders overhauled. I’m interested in getting more power out of it too, so considering getting 0-520 cylinders installed on it. What have others done to get a few more horses out of a GPU? I’m interested in any suggestions for what to do to get more power out of the engine, and suggestions for a nearby A/C engine guru to do the work.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Look in the AB trader under services.

You have many options.

J C Stanley in Orlando

Super Dave in St Cloud

There are a couple guys up your way listed in the trader.
It you want to kick it up a notch give JC Stanley a call.

Geneva 0550 and Sketter have nothing but good things to say about him and his motors.

i would go with jim or jc, super d--k is a thief if you want to know just ask and i will tell all. i have a gpu that jim built and it runs. my buddy also has one of jims gpus on his race boat. he knows things about those motors that would make your head spin. jc is the same way i haven't seen any junk from any of them two.

JC and Ben Stanley have done alot of the gpu conversions. Skeeter could tell you more about what it would cost or just call JC. 407-927-9701. They built my 0550 and installed ram aviation roller rockers which reduce valve guide wear and increase performance. Skeeter has a 72" 3 blade sensenich set at almost the 3 mark and spins it 2900 rpm's. Alot of extra power for the money. They also make a nice oil pan to replace the stock one.

KR23, I have heard good things about jim lauderdale also. My friend Al who builds deckover hulls and is originaly from davie said jim tought him how to set up the bottom of a boat. Al's hulls do not porpoise and run awesome on dry ground.

I'll vouch for Gary Barber and Outlaw Aircraft Engines. I have an O-320 Outlaw Aircraft Engine on my current boat and I couldn't be happier. I had Gary overhaul several aircraft cylinders and the work has been exceptional. When I had an O-290 that he did not build, I could still count on him to get me any parts I needed.

I don't think you can go wrong with Gary and the prices are very reasonable.

I too am interested in this topic. What mods can be done too the standard 470 gpu cylinders, such as how much overbore can you go without boring the case and are there flatop pistons available. Money is an issue and I already know it will take about 4K for a 520 cylinder install.

good work should not go unsaid....Gary barber sold my brother inlaw a 520 which has turned out to be a bad arse motor. They had some problems in the beginning, but Gary accomodated the customer and made him happy!
Tom Schmidt down here in Ft lauderdale will get you out the door with a solid job whatever he does. Plus he is an AP mechanic and a fellow airboater.

Gary's building me an IO520 right now also. I can tell you that I have been impressed with his knowledge and willingness to build the motor the right way. He keeps me informed of the progress, which would make me recommend him to anyone.
