i have a 0-290 that i have been running for a few years i recently put new pistons, rings, main and rod bearings pretty much a total overhaul the problem is too much oil pressure on a cold crank i have 100psi at idle after heating up it gets right with about 30psi idle and a good climb with acceleration.i have checked the check vale spring and ball i did not have this problem before so im confused the engine is oiling because i ran it hard too seat the the rings and even took a ride around the yard unless i have something hooked up rong on my acessory case with oil pressure gauge and oil cooler lines help would be greatly apprieciated thanks...kmr...

My old 540 was the same way I was told that it was ok as long as it drops after it warms . Lie-comings really have to have higher pressure to get the oil where it needs to be

i hope you are right but i mostly use this boat too deer hunt and freezing when i crank it in the morning and i dont want to blow the rear seal out

Someone could have stretched the spring..For more oil pressure when the engine was warn out...Or you have a stack of washers under the spring..That will do the same thing!

i took the ball bearing out and cleaned it and i even cut a spring out of one of my old blocks too see if that would help but it didnt --------by the way thank all of you for the info im new to the site and i really appreciate it...kmr

kmr,
My O-290 has always done this same type of senerio. When i first fire it up it goes to 100psi, then after a few minutes of warming up it falls back down. At idle it almost drops to 10 or 20 psi. When I first got it from the previous owner, I asked him about it and he said that it had been that way since he first had it built.
