I just got this airboat but have not run it yet. It has a 0435 lycoming with .642 to 1 gear reduction with a 72 by 52" pitch prop. Does anyone know how well this set up would work?

Thanks!![/u]

Call Jurnigan and get his opinion. He can tell you whether or not that prop is well suited for that engine and if not he will be able to give you a idea of what would be best to put on it.

Got this from here: http://home.adelphia.net/~aeroengine/Lycoming.html

6cyl; GO-435; 210hp@3000rpm-260@3400; 1941-1977; Wt = 407-458#; TC = 228 on 8/30/44.
Geared to 0.642 (77:120).
Ae43; AMC; AY41,44,51,52,60; J41toJ76-77; W44toW62-63.
Applications: (US) Aero Commander 520; Beech 50 Twin Bonanza; Morrow 1-L Trainer; Ryan Navion 260; Weatherly-Campbell Colt.

I was told parts are extremely expensive for these motors if you have to rebuild, but they are pretty decent engines. I think I'd prop it so that the motor was turning around that 3400 mark.

Thanks Rick
I thought you are not suppossed to run that high of RPMs. Thanks for the info

You wouldn't want to turn a prop that fast, but at 3400 rpm's the gear will have the prop slowed down to around 2200 rpm's.

The adjustable composite props take most of the guess work out of choosing the right prop and getting the motor to turn the most efficient rpm's. They are well worth their money in my opinion.

Calling Jurnigan was good advice. Also, Wally Moore would be another. He's in Orlando and has been building airboat engines for years and has a good reputation for quality. Here's his contact information:

Moore's Aircraft Engines Inc

I've never owned a geared aircraft engine, so take my advice with a grain of salt.

Put a cooling shroud on the GO-435 and it will last. There were several in this area that came from Kelley AFB . The props were 72X74, very thick hubs.
