I'm looking to buy my forst airboat..... going to look at one this weekend with a 047 continental---- any opinions on this motor... what should I look out for ? How many HP does it have ?

Most of the single mag O-470 G.P.U.'s are 220 hp.

People I know that have them started with them because they are a good low budget motor and they all seem to like them.

I wouldn't know anything specifically to watch out for, other than just not buying something that's already wore out.

They make a great first boat motor. They’re called a PE 150 because they are rated at 150HP in a generator running at lower RPM’s than you run in a boat. Most people agree they make around 220HP at 3,200 RPM. Remember these motors in good condition with all accessories (STARTER, ALTENATOR, HEADERS, CARB and PROP ADAPTOR) are worth between $2,600 to $3,200. To check the motor out. Look at the oil pressure after it’s warmed up it better be over 25PSI. If you can pull out the spark plugs to make sure none of them are covered with oil. If it has new plugs then look in the exhaust pipes for oil. The best way to tell its condition is to do a compression test. All the cylinders shouldn’t very more that 15 PSI. If you don’t want to do a compression test. The easiest way to tell it’s ring and cylinder condition is to look at the crank case vent hose. This hose is around 2 inched in diameter and runs back to the rear of the cage. On most 220GPU the vent hose comes from one of two places either the front of the motor from a fabricated plate or the rear of the motor on top where the governor use to be. When it’s running if a lot of white smoke or oil comes out the vent tube the motor is wore out and at the very least needs a new cylinder. I hope this helps

Thanks guys ----- I've had bikes all my life-- many HD's and now am just getting ready to buy an airboat. I figure for the first time around, I'll try to keep the costs down , but still look for something usable where I'l get to use it mote than have to fix/rebuild it
