084 nightmare

 After an exhaustive online search I was able to find a couple of 4A084's for my project. The first was located in California for the price of $800 with the cost of shipping being around $250 (condition unknown). The second was a pair of 084's for $500 and only a one hour drive away (and again condition unknown). I decided $500 was reasonable and if worse came to worse I could make one good engine with the plenty of spares I had from the other. The problem I have is that both engines are used and the hours on the engines are unknown, it's as if the engines were pulled from whatever service they were intended for and sent off to be sold at an auction. On a good note both engines are not seized up, removal of the oil pan indicates very minimal wear however the pistons show a lot of carbon deposit. On a side note one engine is dated 12/65 and the other is dated 2/70, both are Hercules engines and are stamped 4a084-3. I have no paperwork indicating if and when a rebuild was completed. So my question is are there rebuild kits available? I have already looked through Saturn surplus inventory as well as eBay and my options are limited. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated

Quick update... I was able to return one of the engines and picked up a 084-4. This one came with a slick mag (firing on all 4 sparkplugs) and had the screw on oil filter assembly( which is way more convenient) . I made a compression tester and will be checking compression after I get the starter wired up.The stock carb had been stripped completely down and soaking in B-12 chemtreat for about 4 days and looks brand new, just need to get some oil return hoses for the heads and if The compression test goes well I should be firing this thing up.

I'm having troubles with 4a084 also. More specifically the trouble is finding one. I can find them like you for 800+ but couple that with shipping and the cost becomes too much. I did find one an hour away yesterday, but the guy wanted 1500 and it looked like roadkill. I thanked him kindly for his time and told him I wasn't Interested in it at that price. Seems as they were inexpensive in years past, however nowadays people seem to think they're made of gold. I I told a guy I was building a small airboat and needed a motor, he suggested I get a VW motor, I told him I can get a GM LS motor cheaper than I can build a stock VW motor now. I hope yours work out for you, and I'm glad and happy that you were able to find some at a decent price. Good luck with your project..
