220 Continental/Chevy starter

I just bought a boat with a Chevy starter on a 220 Continental. The 4th time I crunk it up,the nosecone on the starter broke.I'm not new to a airboat, but I am new to an aircraft engine. Is this common,to use a Chevy starter? Are they usually reliable?
This little mishap just cost me a $1000 Sea Tow bill.
By the way, what does a Continental starter cost, and where can I get one?

well Abner sells a kit with a mini starter and Chris up at Dakota airboats probably has something to .

$1000 seatow bill

I see a bunch of boats with chevy starters there pretty reliable but like anything you have to watch as stuff happens.

Sounds like you may have a bad impulse coupling on the mag. Does the motor try to kick back when you start it? A bad impulse will tear up a starter in no time.

It looks like the starter may have gotten loose and cocked a little. It probably bound up when I tried to start it,and broke the nosecone.I'm going to replace the starter and see if I have any more problems out of it.The engine doesn't seem to be kicking back,so maybe this will fix it.
As for the Sea Tow bill,I whined and moaned until He cut it back to $700,if I would join up.
