268, Superwide Caddy. 1st ride.

Well its been blowing about 25 mph here for the last couple of days but I couldn't wait any more. Took the boat out for the first time today and she ran great. I have to thank Chris with Dakota airboats, He set the boat up right first time out. I ran the boat with the wind, against the wind, and every other direction at all speeds and she does not porpoise at all. I know we had some gusts to 30mph so it was hard to get exact numbers as far as what rpm she cruised at, etc. The wind direction really made a difference. The 268:1 with the 80in superwides really works well with my set up. In the past 6 years I have owned and run a 2.12:1 with a 78in 3B power plus. then I went to a 2.12:1 and 80 in falcons. after a fresh rebuild, more hp, went to a 2.37:1 and a 3B 80in Maxiums. I can not fairly compare the superwides to the maximus blades because I have not run them both with the 268:1. But the 268:1 definitely jumps up on plane quicker, has more snap, and cruises at a lower rpm. the boat also moves on dry ground at a lower rpm. With both set ups the blades were picthed so the WOT was @ 4800rpm. The superwides are set on the #3 mark and the maximus blades were set @ 1/8 in past the factory mark. there is only one mark on them. top end appears to be about the same between the two. The 2.68:1 just does everything quicker. This is IMO with my set up.

we wanna see some pics of that tank climbing over obstacles- maybe some new yorkers camry or something !!

T-REX Tell Chris to hurry up and finish yours and we will go camry hunting together. Open season on any one of them with NY plates.

i hear that !!!
tuesday i go up there and drop off some more parts- and pay a visit to my engine builder - give him alittle motivation. :)
ive got more parts coming from potter and summit so all this should be coming to a head real soon. im running out of time actually. GITTER DONE !!!!!!!

GOOD DEAL JOHN ! ANOTHER REAL GM IRON HORSE A RUNNING ! WE GET REX A GOING !WE WILL MAKE A RIDE SOMEWHERE JUST CAD BOATS !WE GOT A FEW AROUND NOW DAYS ! WE CAN MAKE A HERD ! GOING TO MAKE A TANK FOR MY TRUCK TO FILL OUR BOATS GET IT WAY CHEAPER THAT WAY ! :D

John C., what is that color of green y'all used for your new rigging ? I think it makes a real sharp looking boat.

Olf, It's olive green. I am thinking of painting the hull the same color. I use the boat mostly for duck hunting. I really like some of the camo rigs but all olive should do just fine.

Fatboy--your right. You let me know and the Maddog will be there. Hope you guys will let me keep up......

Charles

Ruagatr, Have you experimented with some differant pitch settings? I have only had the boat out this one time and the weather was bad. Just curious If you have played with pitch settings and what rpm you are turning at wot.

I really havent. I set mine at 23 degrees pitch---forget the marks since they are off by a bunch blade to blade, and she turns 4800 which is 1800 propeller rpm...which is my preference. I dont need more power---i want quiet and gas mileage. And she runs the ground more than adequate. I had ten men, two dogs, a bunch of stuff and 100 decoys in my boat and crossed a levee with it this year no problem....so she seems to be doing okay.

and i will tell that i would ride and get excited for that day and then let my wife stop me just before i can go as usual

FB, please explain exactly what happened to you today, were you stuck and reved it out and it let go ? its really hard to interpret what you are typing- the key board is turning your good english into latin !! i hope you didnt do any real harm to that engine. like you said we are gettin a herd together here ! gotta keep everybody on all fours !
charles- you freakin crossed a levy with ten people on your boat ? does that mean i shouldnt be too concerned with a light load ?! holy-cow that would be a sight to see-imagine how many honeys you could deliver to a party ! :D

Fatboy, hope nothing serious is wrong with your motor. It would be kinda cool to get a bunch of Caddy boats together. And Charles I wouldn't worry about keeping up. I'm sure we will all be following you.

Fatboy: It seems unlikely that you are not getting advance. No way will she pull to 5000 under heavy load with no advance other than initial. What happened is you overstressed and leaned out the engine and it blew a headgasket, just like mine did this year while towing a huge boat into a 25 knot headwind in deep water with 8 people from the two boats in my boat. Just went too lean. Everything has its limits and you found your engines limit for stress and probably detonation as well. Check the plugs under a light--look for the shiny aluminum pieces. Also, I would try the Corteco gaskets---they seem to hold up better than the Felpros. Regards, Charles

jdotson can change a head gasket in a jiffy he did it alot till he figured out his factory timing mark was not right

Ruagatr,
I run a Acell billet dis (md#73000) with no vacuum adv. The only thing it has is a mag pickup and modual. My timing is set at 8 degrees initial for a total of 36 and I can pull my 82" super wide to 5000rpm set at #3. The next time I go to the river I am going to set my prop to the #4 setting and see how high it will pull. I believe the intake is stopping the motor from pulling any higher now not the load on the motor.

WELL BACK TO THE STORY ! TOO TOO LEAN AT THE TOP ! NO BIGGIE ! NUMBER TWO PISTON TOP GLAND IS OUT ! NO CYL DAMAGE LOW DOLLAR FIX ! CROW GOT A ACCEL 7600 SERIES !ITS SEEMS ON TOP IT GOES FROM 28 TO 34 SORT OF ERATIC ON TOP ! WILL FIX MY STUFF BE BETTER THAN BEFORE !
