Don't make a move just yet. Look at all options. I am running a 72" powershift Signiture 2 blade which is on loan to me by Bobby Corey( Powershift Patty's husband). He and patty have just got in several sets of Cypress series blades and next weekend Bobby and I are going to do some testing useing a 3 blade cypress series on my 520 (285hp) and 4blade setup on his 520 (300hp). We will also be doing thrust and sound measurements on all setups. I'll post findings when we are done.
Also I tried a 3 blade Q series 72" on my boat. It wasn't the best on my boat.

swampjet, do you like your 72" PS...? i honestly expected more out of mine. it will be a few weeks before i do anything but i am very eager to hear your results. at this point right now, i'm torn between the 3 blade H and the 2 blade Q. to put it this way, when i run nasty stuff, i usually cruise it at about 2300 rpms.....so, with that said, i'm leaning toward the Q for its low end push. very rarely do i ever peg my engine out. would this eliminate the need for the 3 blade H or does it have good low end push as well? thanks.....

For some history, I had a 72" terminator composite prop on my 520 and it was "OK". but I knew it wasn't as effeceint cutting and pushing the air as could be. Bobby and Patty Corey (Powershift) have become good friends of mine and my wife and they wanted to show how much better the Powershift is. They went as far as pulling the 3 blade (Signiture Series)off of Bobby's boat and putting it on mine. The 3 blade did great with great push and smoothness but it would max out at 2800 RPM. I could run it but it doesn't leave room for play. I have 285 HP while Bobby has 300 HP. He can run it. That is why we are gonna play with the Cypress Series because they are just a little shorter and just a little narrower.
It depends on how you like to run that determines to a great deal of what prop configeration to focus on. Do you rely on fast snap? Do you have a light or heavy boat? Do you prefer to cruise at lower RPM? Lots of questions. What RPM do you max out at? Is sound a issue with you?
A 540 is a great engine and there are LOTS of options.
The Q series are good as are the H series (narrow in 3 blade)Sensenich.
It does help to have good friends to have a "prop swap party".
I'll keep everyone updated after we do the testing and post the info.
And yes I do like the 72" 2 blade Powershift but I have become fond of 3 blades.

i really don't need a huge amount of snap. i know my marsh very well and i know beforehand when i need to turn it up a little. my main concern is that i may cruise a dry ridge with 3 ft tall grass for a few miles straight. i'd rather be able to cruise that at 2200 as opposed to 2500. i'd also like to cruise at 1700 as opposed to 1900 in open water. this is strictly a hunting boat so its usually loaded with 3 people and a dog. i would like to cruise in deep water loaded at no more than 2000. this aspect has me leaning to a 74" Q 2 blade. from what i gather the 3 blade is more for instant acceleration with a higher cruising rpm. am i right? i really don't think i could turn a 3 blade medium blade. very rarely do i turn my boat up over 2500. i can count on one hand how many times i have. i run a 13 x 8 ultralite air ranger. runs very well. i can crawl over 3 and 4 foot levees with 4 people in it and never turn over 2500 rpms. do you think i could turn a wide 74" Q 2 blade? whats the performance differences between the 3 blade H and the 2 blade Q? too many options.....????

I said I would get back to you but I can't give out the figures yet as we are still working on some things. But I need to ask what diameter is the MOST you can SAFELY run in your cage? Also, you said you don't run over 2500 RPM. You would do a lot better setting your prop to max your motor at 2800-2900 RPM. Do that first and soon I'll be able to tell you other ways to get more push without changing your whole prop.
Don't get rid of your Signiture just yet. We are finding interesting data here.

I just changed to a 72" 3-blade H series from a 72" 2-blade H-series and the difference is amazing. I can do more at 2500 now than before at 2950. Runs dry much easier, cruises at 1700, stays on plane at 1400 in deep water, and has more water speed if I need it. Very happy with it on my 13x7.5 Alumitech.
rjones, I'll bet the prop feels and sounds smoother too, right?
A three blade prop is usually a lot smoother than a two blade because the third blade stabilizes the plane of the other two blades ...... takes out any tendency to wobble. Plus, you can get more push without having to change your prop cage. I love em.
