350 direct drive

I need some advice, I have a 350 direct drive on a 13 6 cotton mouth with a 72x 32 sensenich wood prop I'm pretty new to airboating, the problem is over the last 6 months after using this boat and getting it in shape I;m finding out I'd like a little more out of this boat, my question is am I better off selling it, the boat boat has been completley gone over rebuilt motor new prop, wiring, gas tank, radiator, guages, runs like a top.with out spending the money on a gearbox , will a different prop help, all I would like to do is run some dry ground or money wise be better off selling it and upgrading.

red dwarf has a 383 with a 2 blade sensenich prop and that boat runs very well on dry ground

I have found upgrading boats is very expensive. If you can afford to build what you want and then sell your boat. That is why I sold mine I wanted polymer but had to remove my deck to install it and then I want to run a different motor and I didn't want to chop up my rigging. If you want a gearbox boat I would suggest you build a boat for a gearbox not put a gearbox on a boat built for a DD! I have done it both ways and every time I have been much happier with the boat I built ground up!

I am not aware of any stock applications for a 383 stoker. It is a 350 bored and a bigger(larger crank diameter) combined to get 383 cubic inches. Thunder will give you the exact info.

350 has a bore of 4.00" and a stroke of 3.48" and the main journal diameter is 2.45"

400 Chevy has a bore of 4.125 and a stroke of 3.75 and the main journal diameter is 2.65"

Somebody took a 400 crank and turned the mains down to 2.45" and stuck it in a 350 (or 327) block that had been bored .030" (very common overbore size for Chevys). They came up with 383 cubic inches. It worked and it caught on until the supply of good 400 cranks was almost diminished.

Now several companies make cranks that will drop in a 350 block and make a stroker. That is what I run in my motor.

383 is not a factory motor and never came in a vehicle made by GM.

GM Performance parts now makes a crate engine that is a 383, but it has a 4.00" bore and a 3.8" stroke.

The only production 383 ever made that I'm aware of was a 383 Mopar a terrible airboat motor but a killer bore to stroke ratio, rod ratio, deck height for a high horsepower to cubic inch motor. That 383 had the same 3.31 stroke as a 273, 318 and 340 Small block MOPAR man I love those 340's. A 340 Mopar was my favorite small block until the LS GEN III came out of coarse the BBC is my favorite big block.

My first car out of the Army was a '68 Plymouth Road Runner ..... 383, single AFB 4-barrel.

Oh man, why did I ever sell that car ? I paid $5,021 dollars for it out the door. :(

olf

PS ..... Oh, now I remember. I traded it for a 421 Pontiac with 2 fours. :D

if you put a gearbox on that boat it will really change things, you will be able to double your power i did the exact deal it totaly changed my boat you will be able to run dry pretty much anywhere!!!gearbox and a big prop!!!

i'm sure I read somewhere that the short rod sbc 383/400 puts out more bottom end torque than the long rod engine due to the rod angularity, although cant rev as high. If that is true, wouldnt it be better to build short rod 383's for Direct Drives? :?
