350 problems

There is a panther 350 down the road that ate a compression ring and ble w a head gasket. They put vortex steel heads, new intake, and new piston in it. It was having problems at that time of occasionally dying or stalling while running. Figured that it was related to head gasket leak. It still had the problems after new stuff put on. Checked timing, that is ok, new plugs, wires, and distributer cap. Has new fuel separator, new Holley carb, and still has the problems.

It has a 76 inch 3 blade power shift plus, set to turn up to about 4300. Temperature stays about 160-180.

If you stomp it, it will stall once in a while. Then you are running after a while either at cruise (3000-3400) and when at full throttle it will just start sputtering. If you don't let off it will die. Will idle rough for a second and smooth out. If you take off again, sometimes it will run fine, sometimes it keeps stalling again. Other times it will run all day at cruise or when turned up wide open.

What do we check next?

You need to know more about the engine .What 350 is it?
I went through the same thing. You need to make sure you have the right carb for the engine and the right fuel pump.
What Carb are you running? What fuel pump? How much pressure?

check the air filter if it is a small element one, if it is could be that it is not letting enough cfm of air in the motor take it off and run it see what that dose.

It sounds like a fuel problem or a clogged air filter to me. The next time it does this pump the throttle if it tries to rev you know your accelerator pump is working and your motor is starving for fuel. If it does this usually the two main culprits are a low float level or a fuel restriction. Have you checked your float levels while it’s running? There is a flat head screw in the side of each float bowl. Remove that screw and fuel should just trickle out the hole when the motor is running on level ground. If no fuel trickles out of these holes reset your float levels. You need a flat head screw driver and a 5/8 open end. Loosen the screw head and adjust the needle with the 5/8 wrench. Turning the needle and seat into the fuel bowl lowers your float level and raising the needle raises your float level. If the problem still happens after adjusting your float level when it happens shut everything off and look thru the float level hole for fuel. If it’s set properly and your fuel system is functioning properly you will see fuel. Another culprit however rare can be a sever amount of water in the fuel because after awhile of running water accumulates in the fuel bowl and the motor will not rev. Was this boat setting for a long time?

What questions me is you say that they installed vortex heads?????? Vortex heads are for fuel injected engine only. If they infact are running Vortex heads and a Carb that might be the problem. General Motors Vortex system are on later model GM trucks and all I have seen are Port fuel injected. Maybe these heads are aftermarked and go by the name of Vortex but the only other HI Performance Heads I know of are Dart with Stainless Steel valves.

you can buy a carb intake for vortec heads and run a carb with them just fine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the work very well and have more flow than the old style heads

Actually the Vortec head comes form the design of the intake manifold they might have slightly larger valves but I really do not think so. I would think that you would do much better with a pair of either boe tie heads or 202 fuellie heads. putting a after market intake on voretec head unless it is vortex designed for carb and I personally have not seen one yet, would serve no purpose. DART makes good performance heads for 350 cid which will boost the HP over 50 right out of the box.

Vortec (aka L31) is a head in itself, and as "Guest" said, there are carb intakes available. I have one from Edelbrock.

Unfortunately, you are incorrect, the Vortec will out flow the stock Bowtie head and makes the "fulie" heads look like diosaur stuff. They are excellent performing heads and provide an affordable alternative to the aluminum performance heasd available.

Red Dwarf is correct about the vortec being the best head. Their combustion chambers are superior to any after market head made. The vortec head is better than a Fuellie, Dart, Bowtie or World products head the Vortecs are one of the best conventional (23 degree) valve angle Iron heads out there. Only one other head will out perform it flow wise but their combustion chambers are not as good as the Vortec’s. That’s why all the circle track late model and super late model guy’s run the vortec’s now.
