350 vs 220 weight

I just weighed my 220 GPU and it comes in at 330 pounds. That is without the prop adapter, no oil, no starter, no carb and no magneto and no intake. Just a bare engine. It was funny to finally get a weight on that oil pan. The top and bottom together weigh 26 pounds. 22 pounds for just the lower portion. My best guess all dressed out running the 220 GPU will come in close to 400 pounds.

I have no idea on a car motor but I'm sure someone has the numbers. They've been listed before.

A conventional 350 SBC with aluminum heads and water pump with everything light weight is right at 550lbs! I have weighed at least 5 220GPU's on three different scales!

This digital scale said 502 for a stock 220GPU

CC Dakota's scale wrapped around past zero and to scale it looks like 500LBS!

To be honest I would rather have a 220GPU then a DD350 the standard SBC 350 weighs 40 to 60 pounds more then a 220 plus a radiator and the DD350 doesn't swing near the prop!

That's what I was hoping to hear. My 350 has cast iron heads and I don't plan on switching to aluminum. My motor runs good but When it comes time to rebuild I figured I might sell the 350 and aluminum radiator and by a gpu if I can locate a good one. Should I get one straight off a generator that has never been on a boat?

Just ad a gearbox for about the same money and have twice the push. You can work on it to. I had a 470 conversion with sweet parts in it cost me 6800 then i got a q series. Runs good just know comparison.

Hey Northwest,
I just changed over to a 220 GPU from a DD SBC ('68 307) and it was a good improvement. A little lighter and a good amount of push. It's on an 11 x 7 full-deck. I'm turning a Sensenich 72 x 38 wood prop. Don't have a tach yet. I've only been out twice since I finished it and I need a trim tab to control porpoising. I would have liked a 180-200 hp Lycoming because of the light weight but the price on those was high compared to a GPU.

Don't want to add any more weight to the boat so if I go with a gearbox I'll switch to a vortec 4.3. I know the 4.3 isn't a lot lighter than the 350 but it will help offset the weight of the box plus some of the added length of the box and still out perform a dd 350 or a gpu.

With adding a gearbox, weight wont be an issue. plus the conversion will be alot easier. just imagine you wont have to wear ear protection either :D a prop will cost a lil more but in the long run you will save a fortune!

Weight is an issue with me. I don't want to do anything that adds any weight to the boat. The boat is 12'8"x7' and I am in deep water 90% of the time, I don't have an exact figure on what it drafts but when I am in the boat with 2 other people theres only about 8-10 inches of boat out of the water in the back, so I want to do things that will lighten it up in the future. I am planning on switching to a pancake cage this winter and redoinig the rest of the rigging to get some more steel out of the boat. What about a direct drive LS motor? Sounds like that would help me shed at least 100 pounds versus my dd all cast iron 350. I don't run much dry up here at all, no trail busting or pasture riding, so I am ok power wise I just want to mainly shed some pounds and if i am able to pick up more usable power in the process then that is just a plus. Will my current prop adaptor bolt on to an LS?

if your always running deep water why not drop down to a 4 cylinder GPU I weighted a complete one the other day at 274 lbs an even the conversions are about the same weight

what kind of power can be expected out a 4cyl gpu? I'll be on somewhat of a budget so a totally rebuilt one with big jugs and all the extras will probably be out of the question, lookin to stay around1500-2500. In that price range it's probably going to limit me to a somewhat stock model.

stock around 150 hp conversation 180-200 hp on a 12x6 I had would run some dry but not the hill

the advantage I like over the GPU or aircraft engine compared to a auto engine is you can upgrade or change cylinders right in the boat unlike a 350
