40 Years in the Everglades

Whitebear

I just got my book 40 years in the Everglades I bought from Amazon a month or so ago. Took time to get it here through the APO but I got it. I'm anxious to get into it.

Thanks for the tip on the Book Cowboy and others. I'm really into this kind of thing.

Wish I had bought the entire Foxfire series back when they was publishing them.

Scotty

I have the first three in a set, Bear. You're welcome to borrow them sometime if you ever want to re-read them.

Thanks Olf, sounds like a deal to me. I may try to get the good folks at Amazon Comm to search out a set if they are able as well. If nothing else if I can even Borrow the whole set, one book at a time, I would consider scanning them onto a DVD. Strictly for PERSONAL use of course.....grinn....Riiiiight.

Since I posted I'm now through Chapter 3 and it already has me by the short-n-curleys. No way can I put thisun down ! Like the matter of fact first person style greatly. Makes me feel were sitting at a campfire and hes just telling the sotry as it unfolds. VERY easy reading.

Whitebear,
You brought up something I haven't heard in a long time when you mentioned the Foxfire books. Its probably been 30 to 35 years. My Dad has all of the books and when I was a kid we used to go to Rabun Gap, GA for summer vaction. We would camp at Lake Rabun and he would spend time at the college talking to people involved with the writing and publishing of the series. I haven't laid eyes on the books in some time but I'll check on them next time I'm at his house.

Last time I was up there was about 5 years ago. Not that long, really. My dad lived right up the road, and worked at the little Church that is right next door to the publishers of those books. (yes, a great series)

But last I saw they looked to still be in business. The building was in good shape, the sign clean and not broken. Mowed lawn. You all who are wanting books may meet your goal.

I could get the address if the place, but it was about 20 feet to the south of Mountain City Christian Church, Mountain City Georgia.

Beautiful country up there. Rabun county is where they filmed the movie Deliverance, and also the jody foster movie - Nell

Olf Mood or anybody else, if you will check and tell me who the publisher is I'll see if they have an online presence and if the series is current or not.

Well Scotty - I searched and searched and could only find one of the books. I think my sister may have gotten them or something. The one I have I THINK is the first in the series. I've had it since 1979 according to the inscription inside the cover.

Here are some scans of the first couple pages...

If this is the same thing ya'll are talking about, it looks like you can still purchase all of the books in their gift shop. Looks like the most recent book was published in 2004. It sure has my interest.

Welcome to Foxfire

From its beginning, Foxfire has helped teachers teach and learners learn, while also being firmly rooted in the culture of the community.

The Foxfire Magazine has been produced, uninterrupted, since its founding in 1966. The quality of the students' work and the interest generated by the elders' stories led to The Foxfire Book series.

Yep that's the outfit.

You'd really like these books Rick. If I need to meet you to get banners or stuff for the races in the next day or so, I'll loan you my copy of the first of the series. A good place to start. And don't cost nothin'!!!!

But it's a loan you gotta give it back. There is an inscription inside the front cover from the people who gave it to me. But if you are curious Rick, I'll show you this book and you're gonna be getting the whole set.

I did not know they still continued the set after the early 80's. Looks like I've got a few to read up on myself!

Thanks for the link. Sometimes a google search works, huh?

We had Foxfire in the woods in Ky, and I'm sure Scotty saw it in Tennessee. Is it here in the South too ?

Thats them ! WOW! the project has expanded !

I grew up in Appalachain Mountains and loved the life even as a kid. Still hold to a lot of the nuances and thought patterns I learned as a youngster there. The ghost stories, the Haints that still thrive, the snake worshipers, the fall huntin n game fixin.

The books I have seen in the past were dead accurate and worth every cent.

You'll be amazed how much in these books still works and applkies today.

Thanks for finding them Rick :)

What a coincidence. I just bought a new copy of the Foxfire book from Amazon last week for $11. Very interesting, especially the section about log cabin building. Highly recomended.

Olf we sure do have foxfire in Florda marshes. We also of course have marsh gas that can ignite from your exhausts or spontaneously when it hits the air.

Real foxfire is so cool to see in the mountains, its like city utilities for the gnome, elf, and pixie world.

Sometimes your not even sure of what you are seeing.

I walked into a section of the Daniel Boone National Forest one night with some friends ..... there had been some loggin there a few years before and a lot of old, downed hardwood. We killed the lanterns, and after a few minutes for our eyes to adjust, we could still see. It was like dim pale green footlights.

Amazing.

One of the MANY things were given here on Earth if we just take the time to look.

I can't begin to tell ya how many times I have seen things for free that ya cant pay to see anywhere at any price.

Had a Moma bobcat show me her cubs once and she paraded around like the proudest Mom there ever was. She showed no fear and I just sat there and just watched. Oh but I was smoking a cigarette so the thing of smoke scaring animals is a toatl hoax. Had a frog gig in my hand and the boat was tickin over. I killed the engine and she didn't seem to even notice. She didnt take her eyes off of me but she sure weren't scared of me neither.

Lot a things back in the mountains but there are just as many things in the swamps in FL as well. Just somewhat different things.

Hey Scotty,
Have you seen this photo:
stoneyd.jpg

It's Cal Stone's original Calusa Camp.
Found it under one of the links on Roberts webpage.

I think it's cool anyway..
Always wondered what his camp looked like.

Thanks Cowboy !

Nope never see that photo at least in color. looks just right to me. Cal was a hell of a man. If work is slack and I don't have to fly out this weekend I'll get some more reading done.

Sure wish he had written a boxed set that would take a year to read.

Scotty

Gotcha,
When I saw that photo, I thought you might enjoy it Scotty.

Think I'll try that book The Swamp above when I get a chance.

If Robert says it's good, that's enough for me.
