454 direct drive

I know I sound like a broken record, but the BEST thing you can do is put a Sensenich Q series on there. Call Sensenich and ask them what diameter....probably a 74"

The difference is like night and day. For real!

Im running a 454 dd, 16 foot Panther. 5 blade 72inch warp drive. max rpm is right at 2900.

Red Dwarf was talking on a thread about a 2 blade from sensenich. Q series I think. Running on position 2. Said it had more push and quiter than the warp. I dont thnk youd go wrong with either.
Im sure you get the aswers here though.

Alittle off topic, but where are you running in CS. I live in Bryan now and have been looking for an area to put the boat in. I ride now in Waco on the Brazos. Just thought I would ask. Good luck with your new toy!

I LIVE IN MONTGOMERY AND WORK IN BRYAN/CS, NOT TOO MANY PLACES TO RUN AIRBOATS, THEY HATE THEM AT SOMERVILLE. GIBBONS CREEK IS ALWAYS NICE BUT A SMALL LAKE, I HAVE BEEN TO THE BRAZOS RIVER NORTH OF WACO MAY TIMES, A BUNCH OF AIRBOATERS UP THAT WAY AND REALLY COOL PEOPLE

I don't know the answer to your question rodngun.
Be patient.
Somebody will see your question that does know, and they'll help ya out.

Sometimes it may take a little while for the right person to read it.

If this thread drops way down off the page, then bump it back up to the top by saying your still hoping for some help.

Later man.

try s 72 x 36 paddle your looking for 3000 rpm nothing over 2850 minminum the 78x56 is for a reducted big block

We used to sell our 455 DD Buick boats with a 70 X 42 or 44 wood prop. Had to limit the revs though cause 3150 RPM was way easy to slip past.

I used to run a 72 X 38 paddle prop on a direct drive 500 Caddy. I'm sure the sweet spot on the 454 isn't the same as the 500 but could be something to go by.

There should'nt be that much difference in the 454 and a Cadi 500. I ran a 72x38 on a 16' with seating for five. It performed very well.

Sounds like you are dead set on a wood prop, but you have so much more potential with a carbon fiber, adjustable pitch. The only drawback is that the carbon props are hard on the rear mainseal. I ran the Terminator on my Cadi for two years before a leak developed at the rear main. No big deal, easy to replace. Also, some cadi folks place a piece of plexi-glass on the flywheel. That absorbs some shock and makes the rear main last longer.

Good luck with your project.

Catfish I too ran a 74" two blade Terminator on the Cad after the wood prop. I never could keep flex plates and timing gears together after that. I did like the way the prop made the sand jump around my boat at around 2650 rpms.

I run sbc 383 w/ 2-1 reduction and sensenich 78x50 paddle. Your 454 being direct drive probably doesn't produce as much hp as my sbc @ 1/2 the rpm's. I have a spare prop (have to look @ home dont know if it is a 78x50 or 78x48) I have 2 sons @ school @ c.s. Would be willing to let you try it if you are interested.

RODNGUN, I TOO ONCE USED TO RUN A BIG CADDY MOTOR DD ON A 16 FOOT BOAT, THE BAOT CAME WITH A SENSENICH 72X38 WIDE BLADE PADDLE PROP, PERFORMED WELL AND ABSORBED ANY VIBRATION.

I PUT A WHIRL WINDCOMPOSITE PROP ON AND PERFORMED EVEN BETTER, UNTIL 3 OF THE PROP BOLTS SHEARED AT FULL THROTTLE AND TRASHED THE RIGGING AND CRANK, I NOW HAVE A NEW BOAT WITH A SB CHEVY WITH GEAR DRIVE, WHAT AN IMPROVEMNET.

I STILL LIKE THE BIG DIRECT DRIVES THOUGH, THEY SEEM TO BE MAINT FREE AS LONG AS YOU CAN KEEP THEM TIMED AND KEEP FROM SHEARING THE PROP BOLTS, THE BB CADILLAC PUTS OUT A TON OF TORQUE.
