470 anglevalve or 520

Is there much differant's in power between the two. I know the 470 has 260hp and the 520 is 285hp and is there any thing you could do to the 470 to bring up the hp. numbers while not making it un-reliable.

I had a 470 angle valve and now I have a 520. There is a noticeable difference in the performance between the two but the 470 was a great motor!!! I had it on a 13'6 cottonmouth and it would go dang near anywhere. It didn't burn as much fuel as my 520 now either. I prefer the 520 just because of the extra power but I would say if you can get your hands on a good angle valve 470 cheaper than the 520 to go for it.

You can do lots of things to bump up the HP. Contact JC Stanley..he's the Continental guru from what I understand. Do a search and you should be able to find his #, I don't have it right off-hand.

what is the different though I was thinking it is just the bore/piston size is bigger on the 470 allowing more cubic displacement is that assumption correct :?:

That is correct. You can make a 470 into a 520 by changing the jugs, but first you must bore out the holes in the case on the 470

You will definitely get more power out of the 520 (torque), but a 470 is no slouch. It will probably give you better fuel economy than the 520 also, though niether will be spectacular

Remember that the HP ratings on aircraft engines is just that: a rating. It does not mean that every engine has that much power, and just because someone says a particular modification will give you "x more horsepower" doesn't mean that you are going to get that much if you do that mod on your engine.

You might want to look more at what size prop the MFG's suggest for each engine and decide if it is worth the money to you to go with the larger engine, rather than just basing off of HP ratings.

I'm getting ready to do a conversion on my blown 220- just out of curiosity, but what kind of hp would i be looking at reaching if i did 470 jugs with dome pistons and a 520 cam and push rods?

Another question- if I'm going to go through the trouble of getting a 520 cam and push rods, would it be more practical (bang for the buck) just to do a full 520 conversion?

I'll be running a 72'' 2 blade Q series, and I'm worried that I'll be under-propped with the hp I'd be generating at the 520 level.

Any input is appreciated.

Q series is very sensitive to changes in pitch (I found that out quick). You can actually pitch them past 3 (to about 3.5 or so). I'd try more pitch first, and see.

If that isn't satisfactory, add a blade. All you need is another blade and a hub, and 3 blade 72" should be plenty of prop.

I'm running a 72" 2 blade Signature on my 520...you won't be under-propped length wise. Not enough to be hating life, anyhow. Would a 74" be better??? Probably. But if a 72" is all you got, you'll be fine. I've never run a "Q" series though......

That's definitely good news to hear on that prop. Its amazing the sound difference running the Q series makes. I talked to a rep and he said that the decibels are the same as any other prop (obviously excluding warp drive), its just a different pitch its creating, making it sound quieter.

- i was told that I'd be pushing somewhere in the 270-ish range on hp- does that sound about right for that set up?

the 72 q is plenty of prop for a 520. My buddy runs one on this 520. @ around pitch mark 2 1/2 to 2 3/4. i have a 470 he has a 520 and we turn the same prop . I 'm about a half to quarter pitch off from him. But my motor isn't stock

They are running 2 blade Q's and let me tell ya, they will run! These guys led me across several miles of dry, and we were FLYIN!

Good times

that's what everyone seems to say about that prop. great news to hear- thanks for all of the input! hopefully i'll get to see yall on the lake in the near future
