500 Caddy busted timing gear?

What would cause a timing gear the crank one to break clean in half? I ordered a Cloyes set today. Just wonderin Why? Could I have sustained any valve train damage when this happened? I put on my new intake gasket and 10 seconds of runnin she let go. Coincedent?

What kind of prop? Seven or eight years ago Warp Drives were eating up DD Cadillac timing sets.

No, the valves won't make love to the pistons when the timing chain or gears go.

when it was put on if it was snug and it was tapped on it will almost everytime shatter if it is not a good grade of steel i am assuming bad harmonics but this happens alot.cloyes is absolutely the only way to go.

If you have the 76cc small chamber heads, and any kind of camshaft in that engine, it may indeed bend the valves when she breaks. 98 times out of a hundred its from tapping the gear on when the timing set is replaced. Oftentimes when the engine backfires it will stress it just enough to break it. The cloyes tool steel gears are indestructible. The others are all junk. Charles

I have seen the keyways worn out to over a 1" gap. This has been on caddy's that don't have a bolt holding the crank snout tight to the timing gear. If you run a caddy and it does not have the retaining bolt for the snout I highly recommend drilling and tapping the crank for one.

It has the 120 heads and no I dont run the bolt in the crank I will however put it back in If its neccessary That Crank sleeve was a SOB to get off I really dont think it moved. Thanks Larry

The factory chain is weak! Use a Cloyets and you will be fine. Also degree your cloytes chain ahead 3 degrees and you will love the result.

this is just an after thought but i would pull the whole pan off instead of just tilting it enough to get the timing cover on if you were not already doing it that way.clean the pan out good all those small metal pieces and change the oil filter keep that engine clean.

Bondsman I initially tried to get away with just pulling the cover but couldnt get it out so I had to drop the pan. gonna leave a magnet in there this time while its open. Marty at MTS did say to put on new gear on advanced to 4 degrees guess its got three notches. What kind of improvement should I expect to see?

Hell if you are already there I would take a grinder and cut the sump off the factory pan and extend it about 4" with sheet metal and extend the pick up tube for extra oil. 4 quarts is great but 8 quarts I better. Setting your cam ahead will bring your torque in quicker.

it will all depend some caddy's have good torque numbers down low and when they hit around 3000 rpm numbers can jump largely in horsepower and torque on stock and mildly built motors if you can sneak more umph a couple of hundred rpm earlier then you may be pitching the prop alittle more. or leaving the prop the same but gaining maybe somemore rpm.i am not an expert on the caddy just what i have seen and done.but if marty told you to do it then there should be a noticable difference.but every other vender would have probably told you to advance it too.when mine was dd i ran it six degrees advanced with the stock cam and when i changed grinds i ran 4deg. of advance(strait up w/ the 4 deg. ground in.)

If they sent you a custom ground cam, better check advertised lift. Cadillac retainers crash into the guides if you go above not much more than stock lift. Guides have to be trimmed. Food for thought. Hopefully, who ever you spoke with understodd you wanted a short lift , short duration cam for 3000 and under. Check for bent valves too. 120cc heads are less likely, but all of them still can.

Alright guys last question..I Think Just got my cam info and it has 5 degrees advance ground into.So Ishould run the gears straight up giving me a total of 5 degrees advanced .(5 degrees ground in) Its just a real P.I.T.A. and dont want to do this again well at least anytime soon....

does the card show 5 deg advanced or does it say +5 btdc. @ .050 i am not questioing you just some cards are easier to read than others.
