502 Question

What type of issues and failures have folks seen with 502s? Why I ask is I have seen 5 different came gear to distributor gear failures. All were factor gears.

well if ya have any lift at all an you dont have a brass distributor gear your asking for trouble its attention to the small stuff that make any engine live

I have seen many issues w/the 502, but honestly haven't encountered much/heard complaints about distributor gears on them. But then again, take this considering the fact I don't like to use MKV/VI engines for other reasons. Now to presume, I would have to think either the camshaft has been changed to a billet/roller, the intake manifold has been changed changing the gear engagement, of the late-model factory pourous iron gears aren't holdin up under high volume oil pumps. But I would think that a box-stock factory 502 wouldn't have an issue unless modified with one of the things I mentioned.

Felber

Do not run them at 5400rpm like many people will tell you, the motor will drop a valve for sure. If you only pull them to around 5200rpm they will hold up pretty good.

Mine is 5 1/2 years old and has over 1,500 hours on it.. It's NEVER seen over 5,000 RPM. The prop setting makes sure of that... I know it's just a matter of time before it needs freshening up, but until then, it's purring like a happy kitty.... :D
Makes one wonder, do I have a exceptional engine? Or, am I just taking care of it the way a 502 wants/needs to be taken care of?
The writing is on the wall though, the next engine will either be a diesel or a Thunder or Felber engine... I truly want a diesel due to being a ex-diesel mechanic and ex-diesel drag racer...
Hey , X-Mas is coming, a guy can dream can't he???

Bigkavr that just what you need a motor just like you Big, heavy and lots of torque and very reliable we can then call you Bigdiesel

Hey Wingman,
I've been accused of being Big, Heavy and full of Hot Air, but never full of torque..

Bigkavar we just finished our first Diesel gear box! It's going on the nastiest domestic diesel i have heard of  It is being built but is under raps. It is a one off project and is supposed to be in diesel power magazine. I'm excited to see what the diesel has to offer for the big boat?!
