6.0 Troubles

Not airboat related but I have an 04' F350 with the 6.0, every so often in the last couple months, it won't fire doesn't matter if it is cold or already been running for a few hours. Most of the time it runs like brand new, I changed the filters and it still does it. Could it be the fuel pump is on its way out or maybe the crank sensor? Any other Ford diesel owners have this problem? Thanks

Haven't had that problem but it sounds like computer issues. Take it by autozone and have them hook it up to an OBD2 reader and have them pull the trouble codes for it. After you get he codes you can look them up a really goodplace is www.powerstroke.org they have all the trouble codes listed and alot of helpful info for when you start to tear into one of these engines.

I scanned it for a code and nothing showed, forgot to put that in my previous post. No check engine light or anything. Thanks

Best thing you can do is pour gasoline on the seat.Light a match and throw it in and roast marshmellows and burn that b--ch to the ground. :D

I'm with him on that.... i just sold off my 6.0 its been a bain on my existence since the day i bought it....

the problem u describe is usually the IPR or the ICP.. i've had to have both done on my truck ... the icp was done about 5 times over the 5 years i owned it...

I just went threw the same problem with my fire chiefs truck and it turned out to be injectors. i never would have thought that with those symptoms but those 6.0s are a different breed. one thing you might try is to buy a oe filter from youre local dealer i know this sounds weird but ford and navistar have a ptent on the filters for the 6.0 and 6.4 and i have seen hard start problems because of aftermarket filters (tyhere is a drain back in the bottom and the injectors use oil pressure to fire ) hope this helps as 6.0 and 6.4 ford are a pain in my arse.

my buddy just went thru the same kinda thing .. it turned out to be a computer module / sensor thingy and no cade thrown either .. had a ford guy who moonlights come and fix it .. by the way the ford tech .. drives a 7.3 turbo and said you couldn't give him a 6.0 or 6.4 one time he came by the shop he had two spare 7.3 engines in the back of his truck he had picked up somewhere as backups LOL he runs cooking oil, old tranny fluid all kinds of stuff in his 7.3 he filters it and mixes it somehow .. ddin't apply to me and my dodge so I didn't pump him for details.

I got some bad fuel in my dodge and it blew two injectors and the lift pump and other stuff .. cost my insurance company 3,979.00 and cost me a 1000.00 deductible. In case you didn't know it bad fuel is covered under your comprehensive insurance policy .. seriously

Ficm modules are known to go bad too. they control all the fuel injectors. My truck was kicking all injectors had low oil pressure...when it was the ficm.

Like everyone says light it on fire and walk away had one biggest piece of crap Ive ever owned. Iam a ford guy and Iam driving a Duramax now but have heard the new Ford 6.7 is a pretty good unit. Good luck mine always started like crap and shook like hell till it warmed up. i was always replacing injectors and some freakin type of sensor. Finally the oil pump quit and trashed the motor and ended my pain

I cant agree with you guys on this one ,im a chevy man on my airboat, but in my business I ve run 7.3 and 6.0 fords over 300,000 miles, heres the key CHANGE OIL EVERY 3000 miles not 5000 to 7000 like they tell you to,you will not have high pressure oil pump trouble or injectors either, they had alot of trouble with the 03 and 04 early 6.0 but after that alot better, got one now with 150,000 and never been in shop,as for your problem call shane at 620-262-7406 hes one of the best on Ford Powerstrokes around he will be able to tell you what your up against, good luck.

I agree on the oil changes! Very high pressure oil and it needs to be in working order. not breaking down or cavitating. hard to build pressures to that degree with air in it. that's why oil level is just as important!

Yea mine was a 03 and the oil was changed every 3000 miles. I should have known how it was going to run when it broke down and left me stranded in Wichita when it had 200 miles on it lol

I have a 04 f450 that I have been having a problem with for about a month now, started with the egr cooler and valve, then injectors, then the icm, then the turbo seliniod, now I have to take it back to the shop on monday do a fuel an oil presser test to see whats next. I dont have the same problem as you but Im finding out that no one has a ucking clue about these POSes. I am a very good heavy equipment and truck mechanic and I cant fix my oun truck. You can go on to www.dieselbombers.com and ask there, there are some real good folks on there that can give you some good ideas. You are not alone here, everyone and I mean EVERYONE that has one of these have the same problems. GOOD LUCK!!!!!! :banghead:

If it won't start, most likley high pressure o-rings. If dies and won't start look to the ICPM. Probley goimg to need to go to Ford or IH. Some IH dealers will still work on a Ford.

Well this is the first problem I've had at 120,000 miles. I am going to test the FICM today. Drove it over 300 miles yesterday and not one problem, just pisses you off not knowing if the bi$ch is gonna start or not. Thanks for all the help, will post results when I finally find what is wrong. Thanks again

Ck for reference voltage out of FICM at 48volts. If there, then most likely ICP issues. Have seen this come about a gazillion times with high pressure pump. As for what the guys say about not having problems with the 6.0s by just changing the oil a bunch, I DISAGREE. I have six in my shop now with all types of problems. I agree that regular maint is critical but going 5k to 7k is fine. The high pressure systems combined with controlling boost through the EGR cooler is the ticket. Under high loads the EGR cooler kills the engine oil cooler and Hgskts. You need someone that has a scan tool with live data to tell what ICP is when problem occurs or how long it takes to build during cranking. Rotater you have been fortunate to put that kind of mileage on a 6.0 without many problems, but I have seen first hand at the Houston auctions about 75% of the trucks listed are 6.0s. CHEAP prices too. I mean King Ranch with all goodies with 100k for 14k!!!!!!!!!!!2006 models

I had the same kinda problems, frustrating to say the least. Scan it with a quality scan tool that can see live data.
Mine turned out to be the STC snap to connect fitting , orings and dummy plugs...I could hold all the parts replaced in one hand and it cost 850.00 bucks to do it. Dealer wanted twice that.
Good Luck.
