There was a boat running around here a while back in the later 80's that had a steering wheel with a teleflex cable from an outboard mounted on it. It was a real nice full deck 540 and the owner wanted something different, he said it was easy to drive. I have seen some real old pics where the steering was by a single stick in between the drivers legs, so it has been done before.

Larry,
Can you scan those old pictures, and post them in the vintage gallery?

Man I'd just love to see those.

I can't get enough of those old historical airboat photos. The ones that airboat4fun posted were awesome.

I need to break down and get a flatbed scanner, I have a lot of old pics from when I was young and before. A friend of my dad's was showing me pics of him and his father back in 64 on his dad's 125 gpu on a plywood and aluminum hull, very cool.

A setup like that would be hard to operate while gigging.

The front/back and foot gas is just about optimal for gigging and I guess that is why it has become so predominant

How abt hands free Guys,

If rudder pedals were used it shouldn't be too hard to rig the throttle control to operate thru them by pressing ones toes down left or right foot just like the one pedal does it now? 8)

Now I didn't say I knew how to do this :(

But I'll betcha somebody around here does?

Thanx Jim,

for the link, very interesting indeed :)
But Harvey really hit it when he said one could still play the fiddle & drive the Airboat at the same time!

What I vision ia a flat floor for the heels to rest & slide on just like they are in an aircraft. Instead of the top of the rudder pedals controlling brakes they will connect to the throttle.
One step further would be a friction control in order that the power setting would stay at the same setting the right foot left it. Then the left foot could simply tap the pedal to return to idle. Bingo, cruise control :)

Now I do hope the Highway Administration don't get a hold of this :(
