A dogs last ride........

Tuesday evening my duck hunting parner called to tell me that Hunter was not doing so well and his time was running out. So wednesday morning we drove him to the place he loved to catch them ducks.. lakeO..We loaded him on to the airboat and put on his ear muffs like he always did. On the way out you could see his nose twitching in the wind as those all too familiar smells were coming back to him. We rode for a couple of hours stopping here and there remembering all the hunts we enjoyed with the dog. We were able to come up with some duck feathers for him to smell and hopefully him to remember all the great times he had with us. I told my partner, if you have a chance to do this for me, this is how I want to go.....he was put down later that night....his legacy lives on with my 6 yr old Drake. Drake learned everything from his Daddy hunter starting out hunting with him as a young pup.Just this past season we saw how the reigns were passed on to the younger drake as hunter slowed down a bit. Dogs amaze me and they are truley mans best friend.

Rich, sounds like y'all gave Hunter a special send off. I'm sure Drake will do him proud in the seasons to come.

A few years ago I lost my wife and my dog and the loss of that dog really hurt so remember to look out for your buddy when hunters time comes

That was great thing you did for your Dog, I lost my Schnauzer Alex the day before I drove home for Christmas this year he was 16, god I really love my Dog's and reading this story got to me and I am so sorry for your loss, when Alex died it was like loosing a Son to me.

Damn it !! Now y'all made me cry. I lost my trail dog last november. Went to sleep and never woke up . Had 12 wonderful years with him. He left me with two great girls. The one just turned 11 in may. The other was 5. I guess i'm counting the time for the old gal. Miss the ole man dearly.Miss that long drawn bay of his.

Man , I choked up readin that last ride story. I have a pointer thats been the best dog one could ask for . She's been the most noble creature god could give me.
She old and is really showin her age and hate to think of the day when she'll be gone.

Sorry for your loss.

Great report, Hunter will be waiting for ya on the other side.
You can bet on that. Somebody once said, if dogs don't go
to heaven, then I don't wanna go there.

I lost my 15 Year Old Golden a few years back and I'm still not over him.
Alex was my constant companion, even before he could walk. Its just plain hard.

For all dog lovers:

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here,
that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all
of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is
plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and
vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again,
just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing;
they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly
stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager
body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over
the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally
meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again.
The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the
beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your
pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

I had to put one of my dogs down a couple of months ago and it tore me up. This poem helped me though, so I pass it on.

A DOG'S PRAYER

Treat me kindly, my beloved master, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of me.

Do not break my spirit with a stick, for though I should lick your hand between the blows, your patience and understanding will more quickly teach me the things you would have me do.

Speak to me often, for your voice is the world's sweetest music, as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when your footstep falls upon my waiting ear.

When it is cold and wet, please take me inside, for I am now a domesticated animal, no longer used to bitter elements, and I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet beside the hearth... though had you no home, I would rather follow you through ice and snow than rest upon the softest pillow in the warmest home in all the land, for you are my god and I am your devoted worshiper.

Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for although I should not reproach you were it dry, I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst. Feed me clean food, that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding, to walk by your side, and stand ready, willing and able to protect you with my life, should your life be in danger.

And, beloved master, should the Great Master see fit to deprive me of my health or sight, do not turn me away from you. Rather hold me gently in your arms as skilled hands grant me the merciful boon of eternal rest... and I will leave you knowing with the last breath I drew, my fate was ever safest in your hands.

I

Back when I was a kid still in high school I had an old half beagle / half bassett hound I called Hap.
Together Hap and I did our best to terrorize all the rabbits in SW Indiana, and if I must say so myself, we did a pretty damn fine job of it too.

Well, all I had to do was just walk through the house with my little single shot Stevens 20 ga. and Hap was ready to go ...... at the back door, jumpin and carryin on, and we were out the back door to the fields.

One afternoon I walked by and he tried to get up ..... he did, kind of, and then he laid back down. He wanted to go again. He just couldn't.

I sincerely believe the Lord gives us animals in our lives for two reasons. One, as companions, and Two, to teach us how to let go when it's our turn.
When it's my turn, I'll go quietly. Hap showed me how to do that.

its amazing how these goofy old hunting dogs can bring a grown man to tears!! i've never had anything make me so mad and then so proud in the same 10 minutes. when it comes down to it, if we had to pick one hunting partner for the rest of our lives, it'd easily be the evil little tyrants that chew our shoes, and lick our faces when its 20 degrees.. just when you think they don't even know their own names, they seem to pull off an amazing retrieve that should've been on OLN. then they look at you with this little smirk as if saying, "pretty good huh!!!"......salutes....

I feel your pain. Sorry to hear about you loss. You must have some sweet memories.
The good lord was looking out for you! Take care.
