A SOLDIERS CHRISTMAS POEM

I know this is not "airboat talk" but it deserved the highest place I could find to place it so that is why it is here in this section of the forum. Big Feather, myself and probably many others on here may have been gone from home at christmas time in another war time. Now we have Black powder scout and probably many others who may be gone from home for a christmas during the current war time. So many thanks to all who went before and many thanks to all who may go now. As said in a song
"all gave some and some gave all". So once again THANKS TO ALL

A Soldiers Poem...

TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS,
THEY LIVED ALL ALONE,
IN A ONE BEDROOM HOUSE MADE OF
PLASTER AND STONE.

I HAD COME DOWN THE CHIMNEY
WITH PRESENTS TO GIVE,
AND TO SEE JUST WHO
IN THIS HOME DID LIVE.

I LOOKED ALL ABOUT,
A STRANGE SIGHT I DID SEE,
NO TINSEL, NO PRESENTS,
NOT EVEN A TREE.

NO STOCKING BY MANTLE,
JUST BOOTS FILLED WITH SAND,
ON THE WALL HUNG PICTURES
OF FAR DISTANT LANDS.

WITH MEDALS AND BADGES,
AWARDS OF ALL KINDS,
A SOBER THOUGHT
CAME THROUGH MY MIND.

FOR THIS HOUSE WAS DIFFERENT,
IT WAS DARK AND DREARY,
I FOUND THE HOME OF A SOLDIER,
ONCE I COULD SEE CLEARLY.

THE SOLDIER LAY SLEEPING,
SILENT, ALONE,
CURLED UP ON THE FLOOR
IN THIS ONE BEDROOM HOME.

THE FACE WAS SO GENTLE,
THE ROOM IN SUCH DISORDER,
NOT HOW I PICTURED
A UNITED STATES SOLDIER.

WAS THIS THE HERO
OF WHOM I'D JUST READ?
CURLED UP ON A PONCHO,
THE FLOOR FOR A BED?

I REALIZED THE FAMILIES
THAT I SAW THIS NIGHT,
OWED THEIR LIVES TO THESE SOLDIERS
WHO WERE WILLING TO FIGHT.

SOON ROUND THE WORLD,
THE CHILDREN WOULD PLAY,
AND GROWNUPS WOULD CELEBRATE
A BRIGHT CHRISTMAS DAY.

THEY ALL ENJOYED FREEDOM
EACH MONTH OF THE YEAR,
BECAUSE OF THE SOLDIERS,
LIKE THE ONE LYING HERE.

I COULDN'T HELP WONDER
HOW MANY LAY ALONE,
ON A COLD CHRISTMAS EVE
IN A LAND FAR FROM HOME.

THE VERY THOUGHT
BROUGHT A TEAR TO MY EYE,
I DROPPED TO MY KNEES
AND STARTED TO CRY.

THE SOLDIER AWAKENED
AND I HEARD A ROUGH VOICE,
"SANTA DON'T CRY,
THIS LIFE IS MY CHOICE;

I FIGHT FOR FREEDOM,
I DON'T ASK FOR MORE,
MY LIFE IS MY GOD,
MY COUNTRY, MY CORPS."

THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER
AND DRIFTED TO SLEEP,
I COULDN'T CONTROL IT,
I CONTINUED TO WEEP.

I KEPT WATCH FOR HOURS,
SO SILENT AND STILL
AND WE BOTH SHIVERED
FROM THE COLD NIGHT'S CHILL.

I DIDN'T WANT TO LEAVE
ON THAT COLD, DARK, NIGHT,
THIS GUARDIAN OF HONOR
SO WILLING TO FIGHT.

THEN THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER,
WITH A VOICE SOFT AND PURE,
WHISPERED, "CARRY ON SANTA,
IT'S CHRISTMAS DAY, ALL IS SECURE."

ONE LOOK AT MY WATCH,
AND I KNEW HE WAS RIGHT.
"MERRY CHRISTMAS MY FRIEND,
AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT,"

This poem is a reworked version from the original which was written by Lance Corporal James M. Schmidt stationed in Washington DC in 1986.

(This request was not his but was added throughout the years and seems very appropriate.)
The following is his request...
PLEASE. Would you do me the kind favor of sending this to as many people as you can? Christmas will be coming soon and some credit is due to our U.S. service men and women for our being able to celebrate these festivities.

Thanks for sharing that 141...that is cool.

I remember my first Christmas away from home...I was 18 and fresh out of basic. I'd never left Plant City farther than Brooksville :D They sent me to a unit in the 3rd ID and off we went to Kuwait two weeks later. FUNTIMES  I don't think I've ever been as lonely as Christmas Day in the middle of a desert with guys I only knew for a few weeks. But they became my family and we had as good a Christmas as we could.

I try to stay out of the political debates about the war but we CANNOT forget our soldiers!! There are many sites on the web where you can contact soldiers and send them messages. It doesn't take long. And it's free if you're like me and CHEAP :p

Thanks Cntry.
On Christmas Eve in 1967 I was 22 yrs. old, and a command pilot on a medical evacuation helicopter based out of Bien Hoa, VN. I was a kid.
My co-pilot was 20.

The 1st Tet offensive was on and they were kickin our asses. Although I was Army, we'd been assigned to support the 5th Special Forces and also several U.S. Marine units in an area called the Ia Drang Valley. We'd flown 3 missions that day ... out and back, out and back, take fuel, out and back. I was whipped, and all I wanted was a couple of eggs and my rack for some sleep.

When I walked into the mess hall that night I saw the most beautiful sight that I have seen to this day. Somewhere, somehow the mess hall personel and the supply people had found some Christmas decorations, and that old place was decorated to the 9's. Tinsle, lights, .... absolutely gorgeous. At the end of the hall was a little Angel, hanging above some windows. She must have adopted me that night.

For all who read this, God Bless, and Merry Christmas.

No greater love hath a man than he lay down his life for another... for all those that have served and all who are serving now THANK YOU and may God grant you safety and peace now and always.

I spent three christmas times away from my civillian family members. We were never actually deployed on christmas but were always on high alert. I was part of a covert ops team which didn't and still doesn't exist. The war on terrorist has been going on for many years longer than most have any idea but that is all in the past. So just take a moment and let someone who is in service to our country know you care. It doesn't matter if you believe in what they are doing or not just let them know you believe in them. They are given orders to follow and a job to do, it doesn't matter if they believe or not, they are soldiers and they follow all lawful orders given to them to the best of their ability no questions asked. So let them know you care it will mean more than you may ever know.

Cntry,

Now I'm offended! It don't say nuthin' about the ex-bubbleheads like me that wuz stuck a thousand feet below the surface!

Very good poem! I do still and will always respect our armed forces for our freedom.

God bless our forces and keep them safe!

great poem.. first Christmas in 4 years that i'll be home i forgot what it was like last year on Christmas i called my wife and son from a snow covered hill top on a sat phone to wish them a merry Christmas.

MAN ITS GREAT TO BE HOME!

Every time I read WhiteBear's sign off "It's a good thing we don't get all the government we pay for" it sinks home. No greater truth as far as I am concerned. A current gov worker I am and like Cntry, I did stints for eight years as a young man in the seventies in multiple jungles, several continents. Missed a few Christmases too, until friendly fire one winter ended my passion to pursue patriotism in that venue. Never been in the military, but worked along side the finest.

A local neighbor boy here in Louisiana was an Abrams tank commander in the reserve. When 9-11 hit they made him in charge of the local airport security, then promoted him to Captain - then off he went with his brother who was regular Army to Iraq. It seems just like yesterday he was in my backyard (we live on a small farm) with his night vision gear practicing whatever the hell he wanted. Just kids yet men. Thank God he and his brother survived Iraq (the brother two tours) and came home alive and in one piece. But there is a marked change - he has seen and experienced what no man should have to endure. There is now a reserve in his manner, a respect for life and others.

Thanks for starting this thread. Brings up some pain, but also positive feelings. If it were not for these relatively few men and women (i.e., a half million out of 30 million Americans or only 1.7%) we would be speaking German, Japanese, Chinese or Arabic.

When you have to kill a man it costs nothing to be polite.
