AC 6 Cyl Lycoming compared to continential

Is there much difference between the two? Is it basically like a chevy to ford thing?

I see that Lyc 0540's cost a fair amount more than a 520 or 550.

If they put then in airplanes they both have to be good.

My big question is a Jr Jurnigan motor will start off at $9500 for a 260 hp str valve.

I see that JC stanley and Tegue have 520 and 550 for a lot less.

Why the big difference in cost?

I do not want to start no sh#t. I just want to buy a great motor that is very reliable and one that the builder stands behind.

It's just a lot of money no matter which way you go.
What say you! 0540 or 0520/0550?

I THINK YOU HIT ON THE HEAD ITS A PERSONAL PREFRENCE THING..

I WOULD SAY THERES PROBLEY A BIGGER SURPLUS OF CONTINENTAL'S AVA...THATS WHY THERE A LIL CHEAPER AND ALSO A LYCOMING IS JUST FLAT OUT MORE EXPENSIVE TO BUILD AND REPLACE PARTS..

BUT HORSE POWER IS HORSE POWER THEY CAN BOTH BE BUILT TO CURL YOUR HAIR!!!!!

You will never go wrong by going with one of JC's motors.Ben and JC diffenently know how to create great HP out of those 520 and 550 motors. And since you are from East Orlando, they are in your back yard.

Just so you know, Teager Aviation is OUT OF BUSINESS. I sent him a deposit in February to build me a IO-520. He never did build the motor and his business line was disconnected. He finally began emailing me and I was able to obtain most of the parts for my engine in July. Gary Barber of Outlaw Aircraft Engines is currently building my IO-520. I should have it in a couple of weeks and will let yall know how it runs.

There's not a lot of difference between the two....

I'm a Continental guy myself for a few reason's.

1. Parts are cheaper...generally.

2. I have seen many Continentals get better fuel mileage than Lycomings for some reason...maybe it's simply a case of what motor is on what boat, I don't know. But my old 470 was great on fuel when compared to my buddies' 260 and 290's on the same style hull with the same rigging. My 520 now, hell, It is unbelievable on fuel...I'm plum giddy when I pull up the pump!!!

Yes, they are slightly heavier than a lycoming but with the right prop and hull I doubt you'll see the difference.

But, with a base 520 you'll be right in the middle, HP wise (most fuel injected models are rated at 285@2700rpms from the factory), of a 260 or 290 for significantly less money which you can then spend to have stuff done to push it up over 300HP.

Now, this is not to say that I don't like Lycomings because they are just as solid and dependable of motor's.

Heck a lot of the parts are interchangeable but one design difference I do prefer on the Continental is the cam is on the bottom and will get a lot more oil on the lobes and lifters. I have seen a ton of worn out Lycoming cams. I do know most engine builders like the Lycomings because their easier to work on because of the intake tubes and header bolts. The Continental has four header bolts and I always hear mechanics complaining about that.
