Airboat flips over in Everglades, killing driver
Associated Press

MIAMI - An airboat flipped over Saturday in the Everglades, killing its driver, authorities said.

Ryan Anthony Carraway, 26, of Fort Myers, was pronounced dead at a Miami hospital, said Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission spokesman Jorge Pino.

It wasn't immediately clear how Carraway lost control of the single-passenger airboat in the Francis S. Taylor Wildlife Management Area of the Everglades, Pino said.

"These airboats are aerodynamic, but sometimes when there's air that get underneath the hull, it is conceivable for the airboat to almost start to fly and actually flip. We don't know if speed played a factor, but that is known to happen," Pino said.

This story consumed our local news in miami & Ft Lauderdale. Much of the terrible coverage was brought on by "friend" and other airboaters enjoying their moment of glory running their mouths to the media/TV people. One person was even so kind as to give the media folks her video of the boats running 90 plus miles an hour with a huge roostertail behind the boat. People shouldnt do anything but tell the media they have no comment and for gods sakes dont give them high speed video of fools trying to kill themselves. One accident undoes years of public relations when it involves a death. And its made worse by everyone standing bragging to the camera about how fast they were going and how easy it is to flip and die, etc. At least noone claimed he was drunk. Just my frustrated two cents. Charles

Wow! This guy was a acquaintance of mine, I just met him last week down in the glades airboating with some friends..

All his friends called him "Scooter" He was a very nice guy, I work indirectly with his dad and I feel bad for him...there is nothing worse than to lose a son or daughter.

My heart felt condolences to his friends and family... I'm sure he will be sorely missed by all of them..

Cause Sought In Glades Airboat Death

THE EVERGLADES -- Investigators trying to determine what caused an airboat to flip in the Everglades in far western Miami-Dade county Saturday now know the name of the man who died in the accident. 26 year old Ryan Carraway of Fort Myers died while being treated at Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center.

It wasn't immediately clear how Carraway lost control of the single-passenger airboat in the Francis S. Taylor Wildlife Management Area of the Everglades, said Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission spokesman Jorge Pino.

"These airboats are aerodynamic, but sometimes when there's air that get underneath the hull, it is conceivable for the airboat to almost start to fly and actually flip. We don't know if speed played a factor, but that is known to happen," Pino said.

Nobody witnessed the accident, but boaters in the area told CBS4’s Joel Waldmann that they have seen airboat driver drag racing in the sensitive wetlands, at speeds they claim approach 70 MPH.

One boater captured speeding air boaters on her cell phone camera. While they were not racing, it was clear they were traveling at a high rate of speed. While wildlife officials say there is no official speed limit on the waterways, they say boaters are cautioned when they are seeing behaving in a reckless fashion, and could face arrest if they drink while boating.

There is no indication at this time that alcohol might have played a part in the accident.

The loss of life here is very unfortunate and I don't want in any way to diminish that.

But this one individual's actions, and then the irresponsible comments by all the so called 'witnesses' afterward have done more harm to our
cause than you can possibly know right now.

We'll all be paying for this for some time to come.

You are exactly right BF. From the way they talked they are going to start making speel limits out in the marsh. This was an unfortunate accident and I will have his family in my prayers.

Not likely feather. News is the first thing forgotten, right after most folks morning constitutional. 2 days from now nobody will remember.

The comments from the clip were incredibly mild from my perspective. I'm a real hard case about safety and irresponsible stuff. Even though theres no speed limit the ONE positive comment I can make is at least they were out in the marsh and unlikely to harm anyone else. I would have made some vary harsh and crass comments had I witnessed the same thing.

I thought the clip above was fairly ballanced. It acknowledged theres no speed limit, it noted the remoteness, and it said nothing about racing. The speeding boat clip was noted to be a similar boat and didnt say it was that boat. Overall as news goes I'd give it a 90% compared to some reporting I have seen. Maybe I listen a bit closer to EACH word said more than most but I saw nothing negative towards airboating.

I have never understood why any one would want to go that fast in a Airboat if they were not a a sanctioned race were there is safty personel
around and using boats that were designed for racing to me when you do that you are taking a huge RISK

Sorry to hear of the loss of life. As humans, to some, the meaning of life may mean experiencing exhilaration or speed. Without it, life may be much, much less enjoying. As for chance, we risk our life each time we get in a car, walk across a road or take a shower.

While this is not simply an airboat issue as many of man's creations are built for speed, (cars, bikes, boats, planes, go carts, ect) we should not allow anyone to make this an airboat issue.............

Everyone is free to talk to the media. Just keep in mind the media is a double edged sword. Better to lay low.
