WESTPORT — The sounds of summer are filling the air on the Westport River.

Water fowl squawk, crows caw, sea gulls call, the estuary laps the shore, and an airboat roars.

"The noise is excessive," said David Cole, an environmental activist who lives within hearing of the airboat.

Airboats are hulls with a propeller that skim the water's service. The sound of the propeller whirring atop an engine as powerful as 510 horsepower is deafening, residents have complained to the Board of Selectmen.

The noise was so...

The lady had know the water was there when she moved in and sounds to be singling out one particular resident to in flick her will on him. She does not have any more right to use the water then Mr Davis! I hear many boats jet, bass boats etc that make much more sound then the average airboat BUT if she was SOOOOO concerned about her neighbor she could spend the $4000+ dollars for the newest prop available to help reduce SOUND. Any new laws would have to include ALL sound level such as cars, motorcycles, bass boats, jet skis, jet boats , airboats, etc.. without discrimination.

its a bad deal for that guy he is probaly the lone airboater in new england an hes deffanaly gonna lose this battle ay

WELL WHO EVER TOOK THE DECIBEL READING WAS AN IDIOT AND IF HE KNEW ANYTHING ABOUT TAKING THOSE READINGS HE WOULD REALIZE HE WAS NOT IN A CONTROLLED ENVIRONMENT AND THEIR COULD HAVE BEEN A THOUSAND OTHER THINGS MELTING IN WITH THAT READING.

I AM SICK TO DEATH OF HEARING ABOUT HOW BOTHERSOME "AIRBOAT NOISE" IS WHAT ABOUT POWER BOATS. PERSONA LY I LIKE THE ROAR OF A GOOD SOUNDING ENGINE KINDA LIKE RAIN ON A TIN ROOF TO ME. :?

300+ signed a complaint petition. One airboat.............Does the majority rule?

I hope the boats get quieter over time............... Does this boat have mufflers? A tall reduction drive?

Tha article said:
...but a resident reported that the noise "registered over 97 decibels at a distance of 200 to 300 yards," Mr. Avila reported.

They say it like it's the truth. It's right there in black and white - and most people BELIEVE what they read.
And it's total BULL.

You are right armond - that person taking that reading has a lot of learning to do before they have the slightest clue how to take a reading.
Even more logical - the person who took the reading - then told a reporter about it - LIED THRU HIS TEETH!!!!! LIES, All LIES!!!
He made it seem worse than it really is to promote his 'cause'.

And the legend grows.

Why do they print the lies? Because they can - and controversy/conflict/drama sells papers.

97 db at 900 feet???!!!
Was the operator wearing 3 foot thick earmuffs? He'd just about have to!!!!

matt.

For an airboat to make 97 db at 300 yds it would have to make nearly 160 db right next to it which is equivalent to a Navy jet spooled up for launch off of a carrier.

I don't think so.
