Airboat safety manual

Great post Stan, there is allot of great information in there. I saw a few things in just the first couple of pages that I want to make standard equipment on my boat.
One great note of CAUTION in there was, not to enter the cage area in water of sufficient depth for the boat to sink. Obviously they are not talking about a boat sinking in 2 feet of water or less but in water where the entire boat would submerge. I heard a story about a person who entered the cage area of his boat while it was "nosed up" on the bank of a very deep spoil canal. While he was in there the boat slid back into the water and with the extra weight in the back began to take on water and quickly sank to the bottom. The boater was trapped and was tragically not able to escape.
There are so many ways airboats can hurt you if you let your guard down for just a minute. My brother always says that airboats offer a tremendous amount of freedom but at the same time they are a tremendous responsibility. I hope everyone will take time to read the information contained in your attachment. Thanks again for posting it.

Yeah, I had to change that name. It was getting a bit embarassing at the meets and shows. It makes some people uncomforatble and that was never my intention.

Cane fan you can change your name if you want to ... but you will always be W P to us who know you.

a journey of a thousand miles begins with a cash advance especially if your goin to THE AIRBOAT STORE, come on down.

Country,
They said I ain't allowed in The Airboatstore no more.
Perhaps you can put in a good word for me, and they'll let me back in there.

Do they sell those in hardcover at The Airboatstore? I'd go get one, but like I said.....

That was one killer score Stan.
I don't know how you found that manual, but nice man.

I have a few "brothers from another mother" but Cowbaoy is my only brother. It is a profound statement from a very profound man. Sometimes our differences cause conflict but I respect Cowboy and the way in which he lives his life.
I echo your call to duty on election day. If you don't vote YOU silence YOURSELF, so if you don't vote don't complain.
Sorry to veer off subject Stan.

Not off subject at all canefan posting will keep it bump it up for a day or two , thanks again.theres some good info in there didn't paticularly agree with the rudder snatching do get unstuck but thats just my opinion.

Rudder snatching just stresses the boat and wears the rudder rods out. I have done it many times but its not the best way. Depending on WHAT your stuck in, where and how let it idle a while then slowly power into a spin and then head out strait generally works but generally is not always.

Just got done reading the manual. It has some good info in it, but it left me with a question.
The manual states " Prior to entering a lake or canel operators shall ensure that a minimum of one RED flag is present and in the upright position on the airboat"

I found this on a previous post....

11. No vessel shall be operated outside of Water Management District canals unless it is equipped with an orange flag at least 10 inches wide and 12 inches long and displayed at a minimum height of 10 feet above the bottom of the vessel.

Sorry for the long post. But here's the question which one is correct, could a ticket be written for not have the correct color (like the diver down flag) or is the color not as important as having a flag?

I read it that it says an orange flag, a diver down is not an orange flag. Citation can be written.

Scotty

Maybe I should have been a little more clear.. The diver down flag is Red with a white strip that is the flag you have to have raised when you have a diver in the water ( because it is written as so) The manual say you have to have RED flag raised (because it is written as so) the previous post I read and have re-posted states Orange flag. Which one is correct, if a Orange flag is raised when it states a Red one can a ticket be written?

Im not an attorney but I believe a diver down flag can ONLY be flown when a diver is down. I know the flag, i do think it does not fit the criteria fo either an orange or a red flag.

Scotty

On page 8 under Other Boats and Obsticles..
Was it a typo or should I get a red flag, just want to follow the rules or the road a be a courteous airboater

I would stick to ORANGE as stated by rules/law and not what was stated in the safety manual that is used for reference and test preparation. I don't think the FWC is going to choose a safety manual over statutes.

Thanks Jdot
I saw that the water managment district had in put on the manual and I wasn't sure if the manual was going to be a starting point for State Wide Rules as flags are not required on Lake O

Good manual. I didn't know that the Dept. of Environmental Protection and the Division of State Lands had any such course.

I would hope that most airboaters would know the majority of the material presented. But even for an experienced airboater it was worth looking over. For a newbie, some of that information could prove to be extremely worthwhile. Some of the advice sounded kinda simple (like "Avoid entering the propeller cage to make repairs in water of sufficient depth for the boat to sink") but we know that there are people out there that just never thought of some of these things and could really benefit from reading that manual.

Cowboy if you want a pass for the store let me know LOL if you want a hardback copy I can do that also. Waterproof pages are a pain in the butt but they are available mostly laminated. There are some points I may take exception to and some I wish I had thought of myself. The statutes would hold over a manual for sure.

I hope everyone who had an opportunity to vote today did so. Voting is the basis for freedom and as far as I am concerned it is one of the most important ones. IF YOU DIDN"T VOTE and you could have ... shame shame triple shame on you. NO VOTE ... NO FUSSIN you gave up the right to.
