WILDWOOD A three-hour rain delay didn’t hamper Bushnell’s 9- and 10-year-old all-star team as it defeated the Hernando Nationals 16-1 in four innings Saturday on opening day of the Dixie Youth Minor League All-Star District 6 tournament at Millenium Park.
Tournament officials called in a local airboat owner who used his boat to dry the playing field.
The seven-team double-elimination tournament continues nightly throughout the week.
Bushnell pounded out 10 hits and took advantage of Hernando pitching problems in the lopsided win. Bushnell clinched the win by scoring 12 runs in the fourth. Hernando used four pitchers in the inning as Bushnell picked up five hits and nine walks.
“What an outstanding game for Bushnell. This was a team effort, Bushnell coach James “Gebo Farmer said.
Jared Lozano led Bushnell at the plate with three hits including a 2-run blast in the fourth. Bo Farmer and Devin Jessmer followed with two hits each. Other hitters for Bushnell were Zack Sullivan, Hayden Fields with singles and Kyle Dickerson added a 2-run double.
Bushnell will play Belleview’s all-star team at 8 p.m Monday.
In Saturday’s second game, Belleview stopped Wildwood 8-5.
