Boater charged in gun incident
SPRING HILL A Brooksville man was arrested on assault charges after he allegedly fired a gun at other boaters who wouldn’t stop to help when his boat was disabled.
Lenard Levinski told deputies that at noon Friday he was fishing in Fillmaas Bayou with two friends, Adam and Valeria Lemmons, who were in a second boat. They reported seeing a small, gray boat pass them with two people inside, later identified as Angela and Shelton Rhoads, and go around a corner. Then an airboat went around the same corner after the gray boat. Levinski and his friends heard someone yelling and cursing, followed by a single gunshot.
Then the airboat came back around the corner, with people on the airboat shouting that they had just been shot at.
Levinski and his friends continued fishing and moved to another area. That’s when they saw the gray boat approaching them with Shelton Rhoads padding it.
Levinski told deputies that Shelton Rhoads started cursing at them and then fired four shots at them, missing their boats.
Levinski and his friends said they had no idea why the man was angry with them or why he would shoot at them.
Deputies questioned Shelton Rhoads, who they noticed was intoxicated. He said he shot because they wouldn’t stop to help him. Deputies recovered a .357-caliber Smith & Wesson in the center seat of Shelton Rhoads’ boat.
His boat had apparently become disabled and he needed a tow back to the dock.
He was arrested on a charge of aggravated assault with a firearm and disorderly intoxication.
He was booked into the Hernando County Jail, where his bond was set at $5,250.
