O.K. first off I've had some problems with this one particular cylinder in my motor, Lifter went bad then the new one would bleed down and have to build back up the pressure then I was running it hard and lost oil pressure, after a second or two it build back up pressure ( maybe lost connection on the gauge??) went straight in and It was running OK but smoking real bad so I figured I might of blew the rings. This is what I found when I took it apart.

Amazing how that huge piece of piston stayed in the cylinder and kept going up and down with every stroke and NOT FALLING DOWN AND GETTING SHOOT THRU THE SIDE OF MY BLOCK!!!
Anyways anyone got any ideas as to what might of happened???
Never seen one break like that before.

Safari Rick, I can't remember what you're running...SBC? Anyway glad you made it back on your own power and not stranded out there.

I think that with a little JB Weld you could repair that piston. I really do not see it ever causing you any more problems. Just run it kind of easy....................................HAHAHA..

That is piston skirt failure If they are TRW forged pistons I can tell you exactly what happened! Or you had major detonation or piston rock! What was your bore to piston wall clearance!

PS I bet them pistons have slotted ring oil holes and not drilled! Hey Rick pull of the rings off and take another pic and post it!

Looks like too much piston to wall clearance plus a little detonation to me. Not a good combination. Which cylinder is this hole?? My guess is #1 or 2 and you have an oiling problem/pressure drop.

Rick, I know where you can get a nice 0540......Just kiddding! Sorry to see the damages. I got a cyl. seperating. All a part of this thing we love so well. Hope to see you back on the river soon.

Safari,

Airboat Gods with you to make it back to the dock! :angel4: I personally say JB-Weld it and put er' back in.

Here's a good piston to ring thread...

OK to answer some of the questions-
Mildly built SBC-30 over flat tops (don't know the brand)Not sure of the piston to wall clearance.
was rebuild by a machine shop locally that is no longer in business
when I bought the first boat the only things I used was the hull (which has now been replaced with a Hammant-GOD I LOVE THAT NEW HULL) and the block ,pistons, rods& crank. Wiped the main bearings (grit in the oil) not long ago and replaced the crank. I've had several problems so far and they all seem to be oil related. Going to solve that problem with some NEW PARTS.

GOD IFIN THE WIFE FINDS OUT WHAT I SPEND SHE'S GOING TO DIVORCE ME :D :D :D

Rick,

I know how you feel; I had ten hours on my smallblock when the steel distributor gear sheared apart sending metal all through the engine. I had to replace all the bearings, turn the crank, replace the rings, cam, lifters, and timing chain. I’m not exactly sure what caused it, but I think the relieve valve on the oil pump was bad, causing more stress on the gear. Anyway, sorry that had to happen. Nothings worse that tearing apart a fresh engine. :x Later....

I have seen a dozen problems with the slipper skirt TRW's! I bet if it is and you look at your other pistons you will see cracks starting in the ring lands!
