Found a running 220 GPU off air boat, the guy says it has about 400 hrs on it with a Sensenich 72 x 38 prop for 2400.00. I am thinking about buying it but know very little about the value of these. Going to put it on a 12 foot fiberglass hull.

Is this a good price for the motor and prop and what should I look out for?

Not to pee on anyones parade, but couldn't a re-built GPU be picked up for $1,500~$2,000 and a new Stick from Sensenich for ~$500. ?

I would think you could buy one of Speedwheelies or Thurmons motors and a new prop for the asking price of this used motor....it may very well be worth what's being asked for it when add-on's are considered such as dual mags, chrome jugs, Holly carb, headers,.....
Pictures give impressions, gauges & tests tell the story.

Not to pee on anyones parade,

Your definitely not peeing on my parade, some good information there. Do you have a contact number or website address for an one of these places? Thanks!

Not to intentionally bad mouth anyone but outlaw motors out of Lakeland wanted 2500.00 for a one that needed rebuilt and 8-9 grand for an rebuilt 6 airplane engine. I certainly can't afford those prices, wow!

Do the math cylinders and rings 6 x $250.00= $1500.00 that's with no labor. If you can get a professionally rebuilt engine for the cost of parts more power to you.
Call Speedwheelie Tom Jeffords and ask him what a rebuilt one goes for,He does great work. 863-438-0234. Idon'tt think Gary at Outlaw was out of line.

I'm with FP on this, check ebay.I bought mine for 1200 ran it for 2 years then had Stanley convert to 520 with some extras mods.I have always run 3 blade h series sensenich.

If that engine runs and comes with a starter, alternator and prop adapter as well as a wide wood 72x38, it sounds like a good price to me. The prop adapter and starter are $600 from Airtec and the prop should go for about $400. Plus it probably has the motor mounts too. Even if you need to replace cylinders later, it is a good engine for that 12 x 7 foot boat.

I was refrencing Govt. rebuilt/used engines, and maby bit on the low side...maby not.
There was a guy in Frostproof selling PE150's for ~$1500.. Now if you wnat to change carb & manafold for a 2V Holly (BTW: You can get the same results from a 2 barrel Motorcraft carb off a Ford) Then there's the issue of a starter, flexplate, hub/prop adaptor, alternator, new/better magneto, not to mention if it needs new cylinder(s) It's all subjective to what on there.
If it's what you want and you think it's fair then it doesn't make a damn bit of diffrence what anybody else thinks. $2,400 for a ready to go engine with plenty of power for a 12' boat might not be too bad, suppose it depends on the market.
Good thing is GPU's are still relativly cheap compaired to a Lycoming or true A/C engine.

Your price of $1,500 for rebuilt jugs is spot on, and I would expect another $500 or so to have the job done..maby a little more for misc. parts like gaskets, seals, plugs,...

With a rebuild you get what you pay for, otherwise it's your best guess.

there is always a better deal on anything price wise if you look long engouh but a really don't think any builder speed or mike . Jc etc would sell there engines for less then or comparable to that they all know what parts cost ,new bearings, rings, cranks etc etc etc

it is hard for anyone to say its a good deal with out seeing the motor heck we don't even have a picture to look at but the engine in general are good dependable airboat engine.

Knowing the particular hull your going to put that engine in yo will need to build new mounting points (witch isn't a big deal) and should be able to go pretty much anywhere you want without worrying about it

is the 220 motor down here around the hull or up your way? get someone to go look at it with you that knows a little more bout them then you do is always good advise

Thanks gentlemen this was really helpful. Trying to piece this together has been a nightmare for this new-be and what I'm seeing is adding the costs plus trying to get it together correctly which would require some professional work. (I'm partially paralyzed) All of it puts me in the 6-7 thousand dollar bracket and looking around at all the sales, there are some very nice completed and running boats in that price range!

Given another month or so I'm going to just do that I think I'd be crazy not to and I'll take an experienced and knowledgeable airboater with me when I do :)

Thanks Again!!!

You are always taking a chance when you buy used engines. The current owner may or may not disclose any problems, and there may be problems that he doesn't know about. If I had a 12' hull and was looking to run cheap, I would get a used Chevy 350 or Caddy from the junk yard and run it direct drive. The parts are less expensive for these engines and there are more people who can work on one if it needs repair.

Thanks I really appreciate the offer! :)

I'm happy to say though I've worked out a deal on a complete boat and will be a proud owner soon... NOW

I'll just have to go find a place to get stuck :D
