Another Potential Newbie - learn'in Before I Buy

This sounds funny but the best boat for you comes down to what kind of budget do you have and most of all how much seat time do you have. If your bran new with out any driving experience I recommend a 220GPU boat their cheap and great to learn on. Then after you have some experience you will know what you really want in an airboat. Don’t spend 20K on your first boat to only find out you don’t like air boating as much as you thought you would. Beware of people who tell you want you want.

Better go with a 220 boat for two reasons. One they are the cheapest. Two the only other boat in that price range is a direct drive car motor boat and they are a little more difficult to operate at least until you get some seat time.

Look at the Southern Airboat classified and http://www.airboattrader.com. I started with a 220 gpu---I agree that would be a good way to start. I'd stay 14' or less with a nice friendly hull. When you find something interesting----ask some of the experts on here before you make a purchase. (I'm just an ignorant bystander) Good luck
Happy Trails,
Harvey

That's exactly the way I feel, and where I am at right now. I have ridden with friends and it's great fun. I also like to gig and fish, but I've never owned an airboat. That's why I'm trying to get what I can from this site (I've learned a ton already) and find something that I can play with that fits my budget. If I still like it in a few years when I can spend more, then I'll sell the old one and buy something better.

I am looking at a car motor boat. Why are they "harder to learn", is it the extra weight?

I was talking about the cheaper beginner boat. A cheap car motor boat is probably going to be a direct drive. Direct drive car motor boats are less responsive and lazy to react to driver input so you have to anticipate what your going to do before you do it. This isn’t good for someone with no seat time in an air boat. A beginer will always sink a direct drive car motor boat.

i can attest to that, and i wasn't doing anything stupid either, at least when i was doing it, it didn't seem stupid.....in hindsight.............

Sounds like I need to hit my buddies up for some seat time. Thanks
