Another Wannabe Question

Been reading all the posts for some time, and am requesting information on that "perfect" new boat. What boat would be best for a combination of deep water and swamps? Not asking about hull design, but about the motor set up. Most of the boats that I see advertised in the 3500 to 5000range ( which is where I'd like to start) are 350 DD, or similar, with the exception of the occasional aircraft motor with a stick prop. Of course all of them will "run the hill" according to the ads.

I don't expect to find something out there that will stand up to some of the big dollar boats, but would like to get something that won't disappoint every time I use it.

If you were looking for a starter boat that needs to be able to push back throught the thick stuff, what would you be looking for? And feel free to tell me if the low end price range I'm looking at is a problem just waiting to happen.

Thanks for your thoughts on this.

Thanks all.

your best bang for 5k or less is probably gonna be a DD caddy boat. don't expect to find one with a composite prop for that price but with the correct wood prop it should take you almost every where you wanna go. since you mentioned deep water look for a hull with deep sides, I run deep water 95% of the time and have gotten the hang of it real well now, it's a blast. Take your time and don't get too anxious and buy junk, the right boat will come along. Good Luck.

Thanks for the reply NW.

I guess the problem I'm looking at is recognizing the good deal when I see it. I know wisdom comes from experience, but any help on the front end in being able to avoid the mistakes is sure appreciated.

WE ALL PINCH PENNY'S BUT ITS SMART TO SAVE UP,DO YOUR RESEARCH,AND GET WHAT YOU REALLY WANT THE FIRST TIME.IF NOT YOU WILL REGRET IT IN THE LONG RUN

There are a lot of 220 GPUs on airboat trader in the $6500 price range that are turn key boats. Thats what i would choose over the direct drive car motor. Just my opinion!

I think the car motor boats are easier on the pocket to start with that is probably the biggest reason I see for there popularity . I would also vote for a 150 or 220 GPU (witch engine depending on what you plan to carry) for a first motor over the car motor, I personally believe you would be happier in the long run

if you have someone around to help you could also buy a hull, cage, engine etc as you find good deals and put it together your self to help with your budget

Thanks to all of you. I'll keep my eyes open, and if you happen to see something that may fit my needs in the Polk area of the state I sure would appreciate it if you'd drop me a PM on it.

In my opinion you can't know what you really want until you have drove an airboat for awhile! I truly believe the very best beginner boat is a 220GPU then after running one for a while you will know what you want without sinking a million dollars into a boat your not happy with! Nothing shocks me more then when someone has never owned an airboat and they buy a 20ft 40K boat to only find out the can't run where or how they want to! Get a good 220GPU boat and some seat time then when your done you can get most all your money back and will know how big of a boat you really want what size and type of motor you really want and how many seats you want!
