Any lock can be picked....

I got this link today from the coordinator for the Orlando Police Neighborhood Watch:

ALL CITIZENS SHOULD SEE THIS REPORT:
http://www.peiferlock.com/alert-bump-keys.htm

The news report says something like 90% of all locks out there can be picked using the "bump" method. Padlock, deadbolt or even automotive locks.

The scary part is that the instructions are ALL OVER the internet. Within 5 minutes of watching the above link, I had found a PDF document with complete instructions about how to make my own "bumper key" and several sites where they can be purchased outright.

Be aware that locks no longer protect your belongings!!!!

With the sad state of theivin' and robbery out there today, this is not a good thing!!! And I don't feel bad about posting about it here because it's already out there and spreading. Before too long, it'll be common knowledge among scumbags and low-lifes.

step up the security folks. :? :? :?

WOW!
Thanks Matt.
I guess I'll be going out and shopping for some upgraded lock sets.
I had no idea about this at all.

I already got one of those handy dandy items Scotty. I'd recommend one to anybody.

I'm with ya Scotty on the .45
Mine's a Smith & Wesson SW99 I like the 10 shot capacity. I keep 5 spare magazines for it too.

But remember: Unless you carry with you at every moment of the day when you are gone from home, that weapon is just another item that can be lost to a burglar.

And while I like my .45 - my favorite home defense weapon is a gun that used to be a 12 ga pump shotgun and is now a 12 ga pump pistol. LOL But it's a useless weapon if I'm not at home to use it.

And I'm not planning on being a hermit just to protect my belongings!! Weapons are only useful IF you catch someone stealing from you IN THE ACT.

Cowboy - Me too!!!! This news caught me totally off guard. And from watching the video - SHOCKINGLY TOO EASY!!!!! (I gotta try it too..... LOL)

But it makes me re-think my use of padlocks on my stuff. I must own 50 masterlocks.

I've got a pair of peerless handcuffs that could be used as a replacement padlock, and I'm planning on getting some more of those number combination padlocks too.

Gotcha Matt.
I use alot of combo padlocks myself.
They just keep honest people out really.

Many padlocks can be defeated with a piece of rope and a hammer strike.
Bolt cutters work even easier. Espeacially if you hang a $30 padlock in a $2 hasp.

Seeing how easy a deadbolt can be defeated by bumpers is alarming to me.

I'll be spending some dollars on door hardwares, and probably today!
Thanks again for sharing this with everyone. Nice catch!

The only downside to that video is that all of the low-life is going to be taken to school by it now ...... the ones that didn't know this before soon will.

Looks like I'm going to have to spend some money for better security too. olf

thats why when your not home that 70 pound pit bull is a good deterrent and one that doesn't bark is even better he just waits for the kill. as for the locks you can do what ever you want if someone wants in there coming in, plain and simple.

I like the dog idea but I don't think I would like to leave one in the house. I spent 33 years with the Des Moines Police Department and the best alarm I've seen is a radio. Leave a radio on when you leave. Nobody would leave a radio on if no one is going to be home. If a burglar breaks in he will think someone is home. The radio doesn't use much energy and really is an effective deterent.

I've gone to a lot of homes to check out a burglar alarm. I don't think I've ever had a good alarm and I've responded to thousands. A mean junkyard dog is probably the best. However, I'd rather be robbed than clean up after a dog.

I just got this today. Might give it a try.

Subject: home security

HOW TO INSTALL A HOME SECURITY SYSTEM

1. Go to a second-hand store and buy a pair of men's used size 14-16 work boots.

2. Place them on your front porch, along with several empty beer cans, a copy of Guns & Ammo magazine and several NRA magazines.
3. Put a few giant dog dishes next to the boots and magazines.
4. Leave a note on your door that reads: "Hey Bubba, Big Jim, Duke and Slim, I went to the gun shop for more ammunition. Back in an hour. Don't mess with the pit bulls - they attacked the mailman this morning and messed him up real bad. I don't think Killer took part in it, but it was hard to tell from all the blood.

PS - "I locked all four of 'em in the house. Better wait outside."

well there is no truer statement then locks just keep honest people honest for all other I start with the dog (mine ain't a pit bull but she does not seem to know that and she speaks Spanish just as well :D ) next line is a 9 mm or 12 gage and if they happen to make it down the street I'll drop the scope of that 338 mag on them ..................... I am still kinda new at this city life style

:laughing3: :laughing3: :laughing3: :laughing3: :laughing3: :laughing3:

Ya'll got me rolling! I got one of Moods, one of BPS's and just printed one of Bravo's, (oh yeah i also put on the note that the dawgs had an incurable disease) :D

Yeah, locks only keep an honest man honest.

All due respect DMB - are you kidding? This is very funny because it sounds like you are serious!

Yes Basket - This one was meant to point out the illusion in security and locks - and is a joke. But I like that.... I'll take humor any day!

Des, that's also a great deterrent when you're traveling. Leaving the television on in your motel room when you go out will discourage any would-be from trying to break into your room while you're gone. olf
