Anybody know the story behind the pic that vegasharley2001 posted in the slide show? Just curious how the boat got sunk, backwash? Later, Cajun

here is the photo.

Yeah Vegas,
Hope no one got hurt, and the boats all dried back out.

I'd be interested to hear the cause of that sinking also.

I was on an airboat run in Oklahoma one time where I jumped in to help a guy in the same situation. 6 of us lifted the guys boat up to the gunnels and flipped on the bilge. In 5 min we had it back to floating.

We didn't have to lift hard just enough to break over the gunnels.
It was kind of fun, but then again it wasn't my boat sitting at the bottom.
I have some pictures somewhere.

Sniper and I came across this same senario in the Garden district of New Orleans on our last day of deployment.. A guy in a little 12 footer with a 4cyl. GPU had sunk in 4 foot of very nasy water and was just sitting there like a lost dog... We were able to pull his boat up onto the center part of the boulvard (to get the gunnals above water) and except for a minor setback from a airboat going by without slowing down and his wake causing the swamped airboat to slid back into deeper water, (thanks to the owner of Silver Dollar Airboats, please note sarcasim). And another minor setback when the swamped airboat operator started the airboat up (a little prematurly) stomped on the throttle and proceeded to explode the wooden prop.. Everything else went smoothly.... When the prop exploded, I had a ring side seat, 5 feet back and 10 feet off to port side, stern. I was hit with a piece of the prop but my PFD protected my chest from damage. ANOTHER reason to always wear your PFD.. :D But I digress, when we left the area, the swamped airboat was almost empty of water (but missing a prop) and help from his company was on the way...
I heard later that the owner of said 12 footer went to American Airboat and got another prop... Happy ending.....
Brian.

All the crazy driving you do, I was expecting to hear a personal story in your boat Brian! (Just picking) But your the only one I know crazy enough to go 80+ on Ice in your airboat.

Be safe, I dont want to drive to Ohio to pull you out of the ice. I think the bilge might have problem pumping out Ice Water.

Faron,
Funny you should mention bilge pumps freezing up. When we did the swift water training Jan. 1st of this year, it was near flood stage and 15 degrees. My bilge pump DID freeze up!!! Every time I kicked it on, ice would form at the outlet of the pump housing itself and after about the third time turning on the pump, it no longer moved water.... Upon tear down (after training) we found the entire housing and the first foot of tubing frozen...
And before anyone asks how the water got in the airboat to begin with,
just picture flood stage swift water and standing waves up to 5 feet high.
We never got massive ammounts of water in the boat, but just enought to effect the handling if it wasn't disposed of.. :D
Just on of my MANY abby_normal moments...
Brian.

at first glance it looks like they had more money than sense!! but I would like to here the story too!!

Well here is the REST of the story! The boat did go down w/backwash. We pulled the boat upon a sand bar to the right in the weeds. We then bailed , turned the bilge on and after about 30 mins. got it started back. After the water drained out of the carb. Almost got it back to dock before it quit. It did have water in the gas. Drained the w/seperator. and it runs fine. The stereo did get ruined. The head sets. dried out and worked fine. But it was a educational experience! You can sink one in a new york second! The date on the pic. was wrong . It happened the Sat. in May of the airboat rodeo. '05

At least you were worm. the last one like this I was on was in Lk. ERIE in MAY right after sun up --a storm come up and they tried to get back to the landing with over 1000 lbs. of carp on board with 3' white caps rolling in. they went down around 100' from shore in 4' of water NOW THAT WAS COLD.

I wonder how I KNEW to guess that. Theres probably a bunch that has taken their mind off of what they were doing and either sunk one or almost did. ( Including me ) When it comes to these airboats I am nowheres near a pro. I treat mine like a woman, SLOOOW & EASY.

Real easy to do in a low stern airboat. Just a second of not paying attention. OOPPS.

Ron - I could see how that could easily happen. Just 3 foot whitecaps in an airboat is hairy. Lucky it was only 4 feet deep. But I have a question from an apparently ignorant southern boy.

WHAT IN THE WORLD WERE THEY DOING WITH A 1000 POUNDS OF CARP IN THEIR BOAT? Please tell me it was for cat food or a fishing tournament.

Marshmaster it was a bow fishing tournament. 8pm to 8am for the most rough fish. we start the first week end of April be their ice or not. Hope fully not.
