anyone mounted a winch?

Oh, I know, Olf. I'm not upset at all. I just wanted to set the record straight. Although, I HAVE done a few dumb things in my youth. And still do from time to time, when no one is looking.

Thanks for the info and link Red.

PassTime Larry had a winch in his boat. He had his boat here the day Hurricane Katrina swamped out his home in New Orleans. He was here for the first Operation Airboat on 8/27/05

CC and Rick got good photos of it and they are probably in the gallery if you want to go looking for them.

It was a killer boat From Mark's Airboats in Louisiana. I believe he sank that boat a week or two later in the streets of New Orleans. Word is he had to leave it there in the crap-water until it receded.

I wish he'd post more again on this forum! It was nice to see him in 2006 at the GTO swap meet.

The way to beat the weight issue of the winch on the bow is the smart use of pulleys and mount the winch low in the center of the boat. Adding pounds is adding pounds... But you can get it off the bow.

matt.

For somebody who would want to play around with the idea, a lightweight winch (aluminum capstan, etc.) that could be pulled out, hooked into the bow eye, and plugged into a 12V receptacle might sell.

It might mean the difference between spending the night in the marsh or getting home if you were stuck and by yourself. Just a thought.

olf

I also found a 2500lb winch for an ATV that is only 23 lbs.

I am thinking of making a steel plate with attaching holes for straps. Hook a tow strap to the bow straps, displacing the weight and then stomping an anchor in the mud.

I made this to mount in the Reciever Hitch of my truck, plus had a reciever mounted to the front of my truck. I also have a reciever mounted on the fron of my Mud Motor Rig, and in the off season, I will have a Reciever mounted to the front of the airboat. It has come in very handy in my Mud Motor Rig, and I just have the feeling that it will do the same in my Airboat.

Due to the weight, I only tke it when I am running new water, or going somewhere I KNOW I could possibly need it. But it works as a "One Winch Meets ALL Needs Deal". It is also a Warn 9000. I just like to be Prepared... cooter

I have a 9500 lb Warn, mounted in a receiver. That was my first thought, but when I saw the 2500lb at only 23lbs, I thought might be better, and leave it in boat all time.

The little atv winches will work fine if you have a long enough rope for them. the longer the pull the less steep an angle on the aluminum dansforth anchor you have shoved in the dirt to pull against. Usually all you really want to do is get the heck out of where you are. The winch along with your throttle will move your boat no problem and if you are moving when you go past the anchor dont worry pulling it backwards will just dislodge it and it will follow you for a ways as long as it doesn't snag on something else.

But the whole trick is to have a very long pull rope and a aluminum dansforth anchor because it doesn't weigh very much. I have lots of experience with this from my dd days. IT WORKS just keep it simple
