anyone use disturbuters instead of Mags??

was wondering who runs distributors in stead of mags? I saw one today that hooks up on a adapter for the oil pump but was hoping some has dual disturbers setup that could post some pictures and maybe answer some questions

That's Waterthunder's old boat, he can tell you the details

i had a 8 cyl gpu that i bought with out a mag ,and took a h.e.i. dist cut it way down ,turned a adapter on the layth and mounted it to the tach drive . drove the boat for two years ,sold it to my uncle billy 10 yrs. ago worked perfect i dont think it has ever been adjusted . fires right up today................

8 cyl is what i saw one on problem I am having in my head is 12 plugs and one disturber I am thinking I need two

waterthunder plays with AC motors

You could run one mag and one distributor. Some airplanes were built that way.

If you mean you only have one mag for the GPU 220 then since you have it apart this would be a good time to fix the case for the second mag. I'm not sure what all is necessary but something has to be done to the case to accept the second mag. Lots of folks can do the work for you.

fixing for the mag isn't really the problem I just don't have the mags and distributors are cheaper plus they seem easier to mess with

I used a slant 6 Dodge electronic distributor and a HI6 Crane ignition. With the same timing my idle increased 200 or so RPM's just because of the longer spark duration! The electronic stuff burns almost twice the crank shaft rotation as a mag and the spark voltage is way higher especially at low RPM's. Me and the people who I worked with on the LS2,LS6 ignitions are building and testing a mag replacement ignition that can be programmed with a lap top. Were also planning on leaving one old style mag in the A/C motors to appease the old timers! You can program your own timing curve and set your timing with in one degree every 100 RPM also the spark duration and energy will go thru the roof compared to the old mag's.

that may be a little over my head since I can't even figure out how to use my GPS

But when do you plan to have that out and what type of price range do you expect them to sell at?

Here is a cheap compromise. Pay the $200 to get the engine fixed to install the mag and then just cover the mag hole until you find another mag at a price you like. You can put a spark plug in the bottom holes and just not connect them until you get the other mag and harness. With the engine apart, now is the time to get it set for the other mag.

my case already has places for dual mags and cover plates but have no mags ..... I actual have distributors if I can figure out who to run duals and the wires would be easier to replace now and then also

To be honest it's much easier for you to put the mag's in. See a distributor needs to turn half the engine RPM's and the only way to run one off a A/C motor is to drive it off the oil pump or the Tach Drive! Because each cylinder takes two revolutions to fire so you can't have your distributor turn the same revolutions as your motor because it will not work. Also mag's make such a weak spark at low RPM's the are overdriven so they can generate more voltage for spark!

GH,Louis Ingles in Inverness has them already overhauled for $200 with the Impulse couplings.352-344-1934

Without doubt a distributor system will produce a better spark, but part of the AB experience IS the sounds and smells: There's nothing like the sound of an impulse coupling "clicking" and the smell of water vegitation cooking on a set of red hot exhaust stacks. Ya'll know what I'm talk'n about.
IF you could could cure the drive raito problem, the distributor off an old IH farmtractor (Farm-All) might be the ticket, as they bolt in the same houseing as a mag fired engine.
