Here is a dyno run from my EFI build comparing E85 (E63 actually) vs. 93 pump fuel. Keep in mind that this engine was built for 93 octane fuel, so it's not really setup to take advantage of e85. If built strictly for e85 it would have much higher compression (or boost) and wouldn't last on 93 pump gas. Adding Nitrous remains an option with E85.
What the hell is an E85 Carburetor? Yes you gotta put the right gaskets in, but to run a carb setup you will have to mix your own to make sure you are running a consistent 85% ethanol. The stuff from the pump varies from ~30-85% ethanol and is usually lower ethanol in the winter, higher in the summer because pure ethanol is harder to light when cold. The chart below was run on e65 because that's what they had at the pump.
My point is that without a fixed percentage of ethanol in your planned fuel, you will never get a carb to hold a tune. Every time you buy new fuel it might need a retune. It works with electronic EFI flexfuel setups because they include a sensor to measure the ethanol content in the fuel line and fuel flow is calibrated to vary depending on ethanol content.
