If p wire on mag was run to power instead of ground will it need rebuilt?

I'd say yes.

Normally it just takes out the points and condenser. However it depends how long it was left hooked to a positive terminal as well.

Thanks, it was brief I immediately knew from the smell. When I ran the wire for switch I was doing it at night and hooked them to wrong bar! I pulled the cover off both mags and looked at the points and one side looks done but the other looks ok, not been able to test the condensers yet.

Normally it will just smoke the spring steel of the points, doubt it will hurt the capacitor or coil as they are used to voltage, you might be able to rework the points and test for fire.
