Biggest Prop for a 540 SV????

i'm running a 72" PS Signature on my 0540 SV. i'd like to hear some comments from people turning bigger props. my boat is 8' wide and i think i could turn a bigger prop. i've even seen some 260 hp lycomings with the 3 blade sensenich. would it even make a difference? i'd also like to hear some comparisons of PS vs. Whirlwind vs. Sensenich on the lycoming 0540. btw, i have it set on the reference marks turning 2900 RPM's. i just put on the PS. had a wooden paddle prop on it (72 x 36) and i'm not seeing the drastic, mind-blowing difference everybody talks about. it is better, but honestly not $1700 worth. people always told me it was "like" gaining 100 hp but i truly believe mine was more like gaining only 20 hp. i've heard of boats that could not run dry at all, got the carbon fiber props and could then run dry with three people. whats the deal? my new boat runs better than my old boat, but i did run the PS on my old boat after the wooden prop, not much difference. please help!!!!!

duckluv, a friend of mine that I run with made the same change you did a few months ago and got the same results. the boat has a little more snap. Not much diffefence running dry. He is also turning 2900 @ the start mark. I think the people that see a big difference after the change, were not spinning enough to begin with. Sounds like you were pretty close with the(72x36). I do not not know alot about 0540's. But another friend of mine wants to change from a wooden paddle to a water walker signature series. So I called Patty @ WW/PS. she told me that a 2B is what you want for the 260HP. And did not recomend a 3B unless you have 300HP. AV.

duckluv, As I stated before I do not know alot about 0540's. I was running a 78" PS and went to an 80". the boat runs better with the 80". Maybe going from a 72" to a 74" is an option. I am sure some of the ac guys will chime in here and help you out.

OK so hears my 3cents worth, I have a 540 that had a warp blade on it when I bought it, Great prop, but has the high pitch loudness, I bought a 6 blade hub and added a blade, then I had a greater prop, bored with that so I bought a powershift 2 blade 72in (kinda because of all the hype) I ran it enough to know I wanted my 6 blade back. the powershift made great push although not as much as my warp, also the powershift was quieter at idle, but at speed it was just as loud but a low deep loudness which my friends said seemed to travel a greater distance. If you really want to have some fun try the 6 blade set at 2700 rpm then add a small wet boost of nitrous to take you to 2900. I have been running mine like this for 3 yrs.. A 10 pound bottle of gas will last me 6 months I really never need it, it looks cool, and has got me out of a jam now and then.
I think the 2 blade carbon props might work better for the gpu guys and car motor folks. Just my opinion, but opinions do very..

Over here, we run 76" Terminator's on 260 Horse 0-540's, and 78" on 290 Horse 0-540 Angle Valves.. These are hunt boat set-ups, and the longer prop pushes better.

I think alot has to do with the boat, the prop. is pushing. How heavy etc......On my 12x7 full deck with a 260 ..0-540, I ran a 2 balde, and 3 blade Sensenich...2 blade was quicker, 3 blade pusher better...if you boat is heavy, a 3 blade might work better, cause more lift area=more thrust...check your timing, make sure your at 25 deg, with a timing light...I ran a 72x42 at 2950 rpm......mine has 9 to 1 pistons, and very good cylinders as well. Sensenich tells me 2800-2900 is the best range, power shift says 2800=most thrust.
Im running a 6 blade warp now, at 68 1/2 inches, lots of snap, and thrust

Duckluv,

When I blew my motor I made the jump from a 72x38 paddle to the carbon. I run the 78" Sensinich on my 13x8 apache with a 290 AV. Jr. Jurnigan is who rebuilt the motor and set the prop to turn at 2700. Probably ought to come up a hair but I can usually cruise with myself and 3 people in the boat at 1800 RPM. Don't know who said it but I think alot of it has to do with weight of the boat. I ran a 12x7 diamond back with a 260 in it with the 72" powershift that was a bulldozer on the hill.

Good luck with it.

Davie,

Am I correct in reading you were turning a 72x42 paddle at 2950 on an angle valve 540??

I turned the 72x42 sensenich regular(non wide blade) prop 2950, on with parrell valve 0-540....

my IO-540 hemi head I run now, turn's my 6 blade 3050, with 9 deg. in it.

thanks guys. i ran my boat today and climbed our city's stormwall levee which is about 30 feet high and pretty steep. this was with abotu 600 lbs. of passengers and gear. pretty impressive. i honestly believe that my old paddle prop was really a good prop and the composite was a little better. i guess most people that have the eye opening experiences with the prop changes were probably running "turd" wooden props. thanks for the info........but, i think i'm gonna keep her!!!
