Black trailer carpet

go to home depot and get indoor/outdoor carpet. Its UV stabilized and will last just as long if not longer then the stuff sold for marine applications at a fraction of the price. I got enough to do all my bunks 4 - 2 x 8 x 10's in grey for like 24 bucks. Whatever you don't get the carpet that is that black plastic stuff. That stuff is just nasty when it starts breaking down.

EDIT- I should say this is about the 6 th trailer I have had in the last 17 years that when it came time to re carpet the bunks I went with this type of carpeting and its always worked exceptionally.

That what I did and the indoor/outdoor carpet scratch the crap out of the paint on my hull.

Thanks Larry for the info.

You can also take a turkey fryer pot or bucket, put 3-4 blocks of paraffin wax in it ...... melt the wax and paint it on the bare wood runners. The runners will last for years, and they're nice and slippery to boot.

I ladle my wax on and then spread it with a wide paint brush. Make sure the runners are dry first.

They (home depot) also make a more expensive indo outdo carpet that mimicks real carpet, not the plastic stuff that looks like a doormat . It may be more suitable. I use it on racecar interiors and to wrap custom speaker cabinets that I'd build for a sound shop in my ever dwindling spare time.

no way the carpet scratched your paint. Are your bolts countersunk? The indoor outdoor carpet again thats not the stiff plastic.

scroll down and look at the berber loop carpet with marine backing thats what you need. The stuff you get at the marine store is just a looser pile.

you can also get bunk slicks and skip the carpet all together its just polymer runners that screw to the top of your bunks.

Just finished my Dad's trailer after the carpet went on the bunk boards we installed a 3" strip of polly on each bottom board. we are thinking polly on polly the boat should just about jump on and off the trailer.

Replace the carpet and buy some spray STP silicone and spray your bunks down and the boat will slide off and on easy you only have to spray about 3 to 4 time a year

I wondered about how that would work with an airboats flat bottom. My boat will come off the trailer so easy now I imagine your gonna have to hold on to that puppy at the ramp. At least loading will be easy. Or try the old undo the strap back up really fast and hit the brakes and your boat will unload itself

capnmike I will second that, I have poly on poly on my trailer and it is not as slick as you would think. I will be replacing my boards soon and poly will not go onto the wood !!!

Rob

yea i made the poly on poly boards on my last trailer and i just built a new one and carpeted the sides but didnt the runners cause i didnt feel like replacing the carpet and i didnt put poly. i left them bare wood and am still trying to decide what to put on them if anything, maybe an aluminum sheet fastened with steelflex on that? still not sure may just leave it bare wood it slides ok

The poly on my trailer has kind of raised ridges on it . It is slick. I wouldn't even try to drive without being hooked up front and strapped in the back.

Anyone used the new decking board at Home Depot or Lowes. It looks like a 1x6 and is made of plastic, will never rot and you dont need to carpet it. It is in the lumber section near the 5 - 1/4 board (decking boards) It is gray in color and I have seen brown also.
I was going to put some on my trailer but I had slick bottom at the time and didnt think the 2 would get along (rub my slick bottom off)
Next trailer I will try these plastic boards

Carpet?

When you got a barge like me you need something like this...

Can't wait to get a barn built so I can start doing stuff like this again!

Olf, I'm very intrigued by this idea. No more carpet to wear out. Do you use a pressure treated board? How does it react with slick bottom? When I was a kid I used parafin wax on my surfboard so that my feet wouldn't slip in the water. I realize that with the weight of the boat it would act more like a lubricant between the bottom and the runners. I like it!!

You can get that material in any size lumber that you could normally get pine in. Check your local lumber supply house. Its not pure plastic its wood and a poly mixed. But your right it won't rot. If you have large spans between supports I'd try to get it in 2 x not 5/4 board.

EDIT - Not sure what reason would be to use it either. Most PT 2 x 8 s will last 5 years or better. Generally I recarpet a trailer every 18 months and I know I had many salt water trailers that got recarpeted 3 or 4 times without changing bunks. Not sure it would be worth the expense.
