BOATING SAFETY CRACKDOWN THIS WEEKEND
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers will be out in force this weekend on popular water bodies in Flagler, Lake, Marion, Putnam, St. Johns and Sumter counties to crackdown on boaters who are not obeying the rules of the waterways.
The aggressive enforcement action precedes the busy Memorial Day Weekend which historically begins the summer boating season. The hope is to heighten boater's awareness of, and thereby compliance with, Florida's boating safety laws before the lakes and rivers become congested next weekend.
"FWC officers will be aggressively enforcing alcohol-related laws, speed zones and the boating education requirement," said Capt. Jack Daugherty, FWC law enforcement area supervisor. "Boating fatalities statewide were up 23 percent last year compared to 2002 (64 compared to 52). We don't want a repeat of that."
The enforcement detail begins at 2 p.m., Saturday and ends at 7 p.m., Sunday. FWC officers will be patrolling various water bodies in the six targeted counties where boating traffic is highest.
