Break engine in?

ricmey1

What's the best way to break-in a 6cyl gpu? Installed new sleeves, rings, pistons then ran the river awhile at different rpms, then let it sit overnight. Now I have done this twice and it still uses oil, maybe I should try mineral oil? Any thoughts?

Search this forum. This topic has been covered in detail

I have searched, this topic has not been covered. I have tried to break the engine in with 50w aviation oil, I would like to know if anyone had the same problems. Will mineral oil still help the break-in? Thanks,

How much oil does it use ricmey1?
It may take a few trips to seat in the rings, and even then you may have one jug that takes twice as long to settle in.
Mineral oil can't hurt speeding up the rings cutting in.

If it is basically stock, then it can be run on 30w according to the manual.
If it has high compression, then i'd stick with the A.D.50 once it settles down.

Sounds like your doing the right things, just keep it up, and give it some time.

kb - That is what I was thinking. But don't know much about GPUs.
It seems way too much oil going through the pistons. I would start by getting a compression check.

If it was an 0-540 I would be talking to the builder.

Man, that's alot!
It must be putting out some serious smoke. Isn't it?
Fouling out plugs?

Even with reasonable compression readings, it could be a problem with the oil control rings.

I'd call J.C. Stanley, or somebody who does alot of ground pounder work, and ask them about it.

I think I remember reading someplace that most folks run about 7 quarts of oil in those motors, otherwise they wind up blowing major amounts of oil out the breather.

If aint smoking bad, I wonder if your blowing some of the oil out the breather, and some out the exhaust.

8 quarts is not acceptable What kind of finish (grit hone) did you put on the bores. Also it sounds like you may have chrome rings I hate them dam things. It took me awhile to learn how to control oil consumption on a 220GPU. Those motors don't utilize valve seals and most of the piston rings available for them are junk.
