Bud Marquis / Eastern Flight 401 Recognition Ceremony Announcement

The date, time and location for the 35-year anniversary of EAL Flight 401 and tribute to Bud Marquis have been confirmed.

The details are as follows:

Date:
Monday, December 3, 2007
Time: 2:00 pm
Location:
Metro-Dade Firefighters' Memorial Building
8000 Northwest 21st Street
Miami, Florida 33122

Map: http://maps.google.com/maps?tab=wl

This event is to honor Robert L. Marquis, Homestead, Florida, the victims and survivors of Eastern Airlines Flight-401.

The event is open to all Florida airboating enthusiasts, former Eastern Airlines employees, survivors, family and friends of the victims of EAL Flight 401 and other interested parties.

Refreshments to be served

Sincere appreciation should be extended to the Metro-Dade Firefighters' Union - Local 1403 for its generous donation of its facility and refreshments.

It is understood that the established date and time may not be convenient for all, but due to the time allowed for planning and the busy holiday season, it was the best available. This ceremony is in no way intended to be a substitute for any group ride or any other planned event.

Good Job Waterlizard, Thank You for all the hard work. Please keep us posted on any updates as this unfolds.

We are going to put together a ride, but it is not going to be after the ceremony on the 3rd. Dec. 3rd is on a Monday. The memorial building was not available on a weekend. They were all booked up due to the holidays. We think it would be better to have the ride on a weekend when more people can attend. Possibly on the anniversary date. Dec. 29 is on a Saturday between Christmas and New Years eve/day. The date of the ride is not set yet, but It just seems to make more sense to have it on a weekend. We still have lots of time to plan the ride. Stay tuned for updates. Next step is to get Buds Buds boat to Diamondback for the rebuild. We will try to plan the ride as soon as possible.

thanks
John C

I spoke with Grandad Sun and told him I would be driving down to attend this meeting where he was going to recieve an award for something or another (HAHA) and told him I would pick him up and take him home there after...It took me a while at first he said for my dad to accept it but I told him no he had to come if I was to drive all the way down there He said that would be fine....Grandad is a softy..... He will be there I promise I will be bringing him....can't wait to meet everyone...

John C has been doing an OUTSTANDING job!
As I type this, he and others, and hopefully Bud, are in the Glades with the National Geographic production crew filming the Flight 401 crash site.

The following is an update on developments with the Bud Marquis recognition efforts. As the say, here is the rest of the story:

We have been waiting for the release of the November issue of Airboating Magazine before we announced the details of the activities honoring Robert "Bud" Marquis. There has been a lot of activity taking place by those working behind the scene.
The news is:
# 1 - For several months, we have been working with a production company for National Geographic that is producing a documentary on the crash of Eastern Airlines Flight 401 and Bud Marquis. The documentary will be part of National Geographic's series on aircraft disasters and will feature and emphasis the actions of Bud Marquis on the night of December 29, 1972. The documentary will include interviews with Bud, surviving flight crew and passengers, as well as footage of the crash site, and a digitalized computer re-enactment of the crash.

# 2 - Recently, we have been contacted by and are working with a second production company that is interested in doing a documentary on the humanitarian effort involved in honoring Bud Marquis and the survivors of Flight 401.

# 3 - At the December 3rd ceremony Bud Marquis will be presented with the first perpetual "Alumitech -Airboat Hero Award." Following December 3, 2007, the American Airboat Search and Rescue Association will present annually, what will thereafter be known as the "Robert 'Bud' Marquis Airboat Hero Award" to an individual who has demonstrated acts of heroism toward his fellow man.

# 4 - The National Air Disaster Alliance/Foundation will present its "Humanitarian Award" to Bud Marquis at the December 3rd ceremony honoring him for his heroic actions the night of December 29, 1972.

# 5 - At the next regular meeting of the Miami-Dade County Commission, the Mayor of Miami-Dade County will present to the Commission a proclamation recognizing Bud Marquis for his actions the night of December 29, 1972 and proclaim December 3, 2007 "Robert 'Bud' Marquis Day" in Miami-Dade County.

# 6 - We have received confirmation from survivors and family members of victims of Eastern Airlines Flight 401 from across the United States and beyond who are planning to attend the December 3rd ceremony to meet and thank Bud Marquis personally.

Those are just the highlights. There is so much going on and things are developing nearly daily. We are now just over one month away from the first ever recognition of Bud Marquis, who as an ordinary citizen was pressed into performing extraordinary actions 35 years ago. The December 3rd event promises to be a memorable one, if for no one else, it will be for Bud and Nancy Marquis. It is 35 years overdue.

For information regarding the location, date and time of the December 3rd ceremony, go to the begining of this thread. For a complete description of fund rasing efforts please see the November issue of Airboating Magazine starting on page 36.

I am loving this totally! Let's please take the factor of their health into consideration!

They are older than we are and they have that "the years have done me wrong kind of thinking". Just Please, know and realize that these folks are not up to all of this pandering that the world of TV an Glitter can do to them and/for them!!!!

Thank you for the PM WaterLizard, you have put my concerns to rest.

Please, do not think for one moment that I do not think this good man deserves this recognition and help!

My concerns are coming from the fact that I am a CNA and have done In Home Health Care my whole adult life. (now retired) I have taken care of people just like the Marquis' and I know how stressful the slightest change in every day routine, can some times be.

The look on Bud's face in the more recent pictures, out in the Glades, tells me he is loving the appreciation he is getting so far. That is wonderful! To see the difference in that mans eyes in the pics is soul cleansing to say the least :)

We all know how the media can go over board sometimes though and this is not their day nor does it belong to any of the political entities that are getting involved.

I just see a need to take the Marquis' health and age into consideration. Thanks again for putting my concerns to rest.

I will address the first part of your PM likewise.

35th Anniversary of Eastern Airlines Flight 401

December 29, 2007 will mark the 35th anniversary of the crash of Eastern Airlines Flight 401, in the Florida Everglades. A ceremony to honor the victims, survivors and family members of Flight 401 will be held December 3, 2007, at the Metro-Dade Firefighters' Memorial Building, Doral, Florida.

(PRWEB) November 4, 2007 -- December 29 will mark the 35 anniversary of the Eastern Airlines Flight 401 tragedy. In memoriam of the victims of that event and a tribute to the survivors, family members and rescue personnel, a ceremony will be held Monday, December 3, 2:00 p.m., at the Metro-Dade Firefighters' Memorial Building, 8000 Northwest 21st Street, Doral, Florida. The event is open to all interested parties.

The guest of honor will be 78-year-old, Mr. Robert "Bud" Marquis, who was the first civilian rescuer to arrive at the crash site in his personal airboat and render aid.

The night of December 29, 1972 Bud Marquis and his partner Ray Dickinsin (deceased) witnessed Flight 401 go down in the Everglades, while frog gigging 18 miles west of the Miami-International Airport.

In the dark of night, Bud Marquis navigated his personal airboat through the saw grass and debris of the plane to be the first person to render aid to victims of the crash.

Having no obligation, other than his commitment to his fellow man and without regard for his personal safety, Bud Marquis waded through jet fuel and hydraulic fluid filled water, choked with jagged metal and debris to free passengers still strapped into their seats. Mr. Marquis braved the burning fuselage to free trapped and injured victims. In doing so, he sustained burns to his arms, legs and face.

It was Mr. Marquis who used the headlamp that only a few minutes before he had been using for gigging frogs, to signal and direct the first arriving Coast Guard helicopter to the crash site.

Through the night and into the next day Bud Marquis used his airboat to shuttle rescuers, medical personnel and victims to and from the crash site, to awaiting ambulances.

Mr. Robert "Bud" Marquis of Homestead, Florida will be honored with the presentation of the National Air Disaster Alliance/Foundation's "Humanitarian Award," at the 35th anniversary memorial tribute to the survivors, victims and family members of Eastern Airlines Flight 401 Monday, December 3, 2007 at 2:00 p.m., at the Metro-Dade Firefighter's Memorial Building, in Doral, Florida. The event is open to all interested parties.

Seems odd that the "voice" that gets this story told and is instrumental in so many fund raisers for Bud's benefit would be totally omitted from the press release

I hereby recognize "SOUTHERN AIRBOAT" an outstanding forum!

For going that xtra mile to help a fellow airboater and true American Hero,

Thanks Rick!

I have thought of that many times. How far an how big would this had gotten if it had not been for SOUTHERNAIRBOAT.COM? Thanks Rick and southern airboat.
