Do we have any SA resident Plaiters on board?
I think it's a dying craft, that I'd love to learn the basics of, and hell.... I want someone to plait me a couple whips. I remember someone posting on here a while back that their father or grandfather would plait them for like...$10 or $15 a foot. Im surprised it doesn't come up more often on this site.

whips are like airboats .. one size does not fit all .. so really helps to know what the end use will be .. so it can be built right ... Just a thought

in the pens I used a 6 or 8 and off my horse used a 12 all the way up to a 18' .. that one was a bit long .. different tips and weights as well as number of layers of plaits ... but for just knock around or minor showoff stuff .. it isn't as critical ..

added: a good whip is a tre pleasure to use .. a bad whip is really hard to use .. and some are impossible to use ...

Crap Yobee.... Ur on to something there
I'd like to have a 9 footer like i had years ago, when I worked cows for pocket change, when I was still in school.

Think i'd just have to carry that Bad Boy on duty with me a couple of times in the hood the set these Hood Rats straight !!!!

IAD would never believe such a story anyway, nor would they investigate.

The constituents are always bitchin about how the slaves were treated, and demand repriations for that. Hell they all are too young to remember those times... I say Lets educate em'
Let them decide whip / taser / glock / or Big Daddy M-4 - its their choice and the balls in their court.......? :p

:salute: :old_glory: :rebel:

Whitebear I tell ya I searched a handful of times, and I never found what I was looking for, but then in your search I found it a few links down, it was marshjunky's dad. Lol.

Cntry, I hear ya man. I just want some playtoys right now though, an 8 or 9' and about a 13'er to play with. The times of a whip being an everyday tool are dwindling at a rapid pace. Im afraid I don't need to work any cows at my welding shop LOL! More of a nostalgia thing, I used to play with all my grampa's whips when I was little and started to realize how hard it is to find a decent one anymore.... So I came to SA! LOL!

Now I gotta call that dang old dudley and see what he's got up his sleeve lol. I got marshjunky in my sights too! Thanks guys.

Believe every word of it. Being retired its more fun for me to watch than try to learn. The hurtin ain't worth the crackin to me. There are other things I do well and I don't have to do or know it all.

I built quite a few cow whips back years ago, but the arthritus has wrecked my
hands, and honestly I don't think I have the paitence for it any more.
The biggest pita was once you start it, you need to have a place where you can
leave it undisturbed till you get back to it. I believe I could still remember how to start
one, and I have put a few tails back in after someone blows it out, but you have to pull
em down real tight to keep the whip good and stiff, and I think thats what would get me.
I still have a couple of whips, and drag one out once in a while to make some racket
but the wife complains cause it gets her ankle biters ta barkin, and she says I look like a nerd.
Like she would know what a nerd looks like.

Overall length is about eleven feet. Popper and strap is about 31 inches.
White on it is dust.
Is that a good style popper and the way its mounted?
Inherited it from my 6' 6" uncle Wilbur, (Shorty), Williams.
What should I clean and preserve this whip with?
Want to know about style, type of normal use for this size whip.

I see the two whips are attached differently at the handle. Is there a difference in what they are used for? Whats the difference in application?
