Bull whips

I think this thread is awesome, but please excuse my ignorance as i ask a few questions. What is the difference between a "loaded" and a "regular" whip. Also what determines the length of the whip? The height of the individual using it, or is it something else? I can tell that there are different lengths for whipping different things (like whether you are on a horse or not), but if you just wanted one to "play" with what would determine the length?

LIL Maddog .. you should never worry about ignorance just stupid ... We are all born ignorant .. that means we haen't had a chance to learn .. STUPID is when you have a chance to learn and don't.

If you do a search on the net there is tons of good reading on whips .. both on construction .. uses and how to do tricks with them. There also is some pretty good pictures to go with them .. especially if ya like ladies in black leather boots and nighties LOL

I am learning to get this two handed routine down:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7_UegNWo93M&feature=related

I've got two 8' Clarence Hale Cowwhips I been practicing it with.
Got a ways to go yet, but I'll get it.

Most of the hide whips I've seen have been cow hide, buckskin, or kangaroo,
and tend to handle better than a nylon whip. The downfall of a hide whip is
that they are not as durable, and require more upkeep, and care, not to mention
they are quite a bit more expensive. You can preserve them with neatsfoot oil,
or beef tallow, but if you use them very much they will wear out. The ends of the
whip are what seems to wear out the quickest, the popper, and the attaching line.
The popper is as easy as tying on a new one, if you blow the tail out, it has to be platted
back in. When you break the attatching line, you have to put on a boot, like in the
picture from CFCOWBOY. Most everyone I know that builds whips today uses nylon
para cord, it's cheap, fairly durable, easy to work with, and dont make a bad whip.
One downfall of the nylon whips is that they are lighter than a hide whip, but you can
soak them in molten paraphin wax, and it will add quite a bit of weight to it to make
it handle better. I helped a friend with a buckskin whip once, and tanning , and cutting
the hide was more work than platting the whip. I'll post some pictures in a little bit.

Look forward to the photo's Kmac.

Here's a photo of Clarence Hale of Thonotsassa.
43752_ranchers-round-up-starkey-ranch-2010.jpg

He has been plaiting whips his whole life.
He learned from his Father who was a ranch foreman, and whipmaker, and then he became the foreman, and continued on.

He always use to build out or buckskin, but the properly tanned hides are not really available any more, so now he uses nylon.

Both of these were give to me, a buddy of mine built the black one.
It's about 11' , the white one was give to me by another buddy who
bought it from a feed store, and give it away while he still had ears.
it's about 8' ( good ground whip for workin in the pens.)
PS. The whip was the first manmade device to go faster than the speed of sound.

Lil mad dog the loaded is referring the the core of the whip having either a steel cable or steel balls that it is plaited around. And unloaded is lust the plaited leather or nylon. I have a 10' with a steel cable inside I have found that a heavy whip like mine if you keep it moving it stays away from you and you don't hit your self. And unloaded whip is light and they tend to pop back and hit you when your at the learning how to use it stage. And in my experience the heavy loaded whips crack alot louder.

cntry: I try not to worry about ignorance because i take the vast majority of opportunities that i have to learn about things. I just didn't want anyone jumping down my throat for asking a few questions that are probably very simple to a lot of people on here.

I will definitely be doing some research on whips!

Thanks,

Mike007: I knew it couldn't be to complicated, but I don't know the first thing about a whip so thank you for the education.

When we built a whip, we would start with a 12 line platt, and drop a line about every 6''
and you come out with a small whip about big around as your pinky, and 5', or 6' long.
Thats your first belly. Then you start again, covering the belly to the end, then start
droping a line every 5or6 '' down to where you start to twist the tail into the popper, and it will come out around 10, or 12'. I have heard of folks loading them with a steel speedo cable
to give it some backbone, and some of the cheap whips use just an old piece of rope for the belly,
but you can always tell cause it's got no backbone. I've heard a lot of guys talk about 16',
or even 20' whips, but to me anything over 14' just wears your arm out.

10-4 ... with the long ones even on a horse you use the no more than you have to .. lots of guys carried two one short one to just makes noise with off the horse and a longer one if a little more was required ... to me the trick was always using it just enough to get them moving but trying not to do any damage .. some hard headed brahma's really pushed ya to the limits .. of course some of them had never seen a human in their whole life ... and some were just plai ole mean ... try cuttin calves off the momma in a pen .. sometimes momma don't think much of it .. and we were often on foot .. takes a special horse to work a pen full of cows and calves ... we didn't always have that horse but daddy had us boys ... LOL

I ask again, what should I use to clean and condition my bullwip.
Someone mentioned neatsfoot oil, been looking for neats.
How much do you use, soak it or wipe it down?

Thanks.

R L, use a good qualithy saddle soap with lanolin,to clean the leather really good before you go oiling it. Then get a good quality leather oil from a saddle maker. I've found Neatsfoot to overly soften my tack. You probably know the saddle maker Billy Malphurs (sp?) .. he's not far from you.... just north of the high school west of 75.

Guess I lucked out. I got to know Curly Dekle some before he passed on. I've got a "loaded" 12' black snake he made for me. It stays in the house on a shelf. My usin whip is some no name 12' loaded, made from parachute cord ....

I got marshjunkys dad plaiting me up a 10'er. I told him I wanted it loaded, but other than that just make it how he wants. Ill post up when I get it.
Also a good friend is making some arrangements for me to meet up with Mr Clarence Hale one of these days, I think Im gonna have him make me a big one, like a 13'er.
