Hey guys I am getting ready to rebuild my caddy 500 and have some questions for you caddy guys...... 1) would a regrind cam be benificial for a DD or is a stock cam sufficient? 2) What gasket maker should I go with? 3) Where is the best place for me to get this stuff... Ive built plenty of SBC but this is my first caddy and Id like to get as much insight as possible.... Thanks

jimmyflfr this is jmo but build you caddy as if you were going to make it a gearbox caddy.unless you only intend for it to be on dd only.and what i mean for gearbox is upgrade all valve train components.rocker arms ,springs, valves, ect.they are the caddy weekspot.shelf grinds are ok but really aren't the best when there are great vendors to buy from.on stock rockers you really have to watch out for aggresive ramp speed. my favorite places to buy caddy goodies is from these three

jimmyflfr, Richard Potter at the first web site or Marty at the second will take an exceptional amount of time with you. They will explain and recommend as well as share their opinions in relation to your requirements. They will also tell you what you don't need. Both have done this for me so I didn't waste money and time. My heads are going to potters even as I type this for reworking, shaft rockers, valves, porting, springs etc..

Just rebuilt mine I encountered a few problems heres my suggestions. Once you get your block back from machining check and make sure they installed the freeze plugs in the forward valley, DEFINETLY buy a cloyes timing chain I went stock and 5 hours in I broke the lower gear clean in half. Also make sure to use the gasket for the oil pump Not permatex! This cost me a 150.00 distributor. Used a crane cam. Stock valve train not using a box. Runs great! Good luck! Marty at MTS is a great help and will give you the help you need. Reasonable Cost fast shipping.

Make sure you advance the cam 3 degrees ahaead. the Cloytes timing chain gives you this option. With a DD motor you want to pull the torque down lower.

POTTER ! HE WILL SPEND THE TIME WITH YA ! NEVER DELT WITH THE OTHERS DIDNT NEED TOO ! CAM TECHNIQUES HERE IN BRADENTON FIRST CLASS TOO !HE BEING MAKING DD BOATS RUN DRY WHEN NOBODY ESLE COULD !! :D

Good suggestions. And if you're like me and refuse to use freeze plugs in oil galleys, you can use shallow plugs from a 351C Ford. Just tap the galley hole, and turn the front of the plug down in a lathe, or just grind it, so it clears the cam/gear (I have pics of that mod in my gallery). And if you want precice cam phasing you can install a dowel in the cam face, and use offset dowel inserts readily available for Chevys. Not bein a Caddy guy there are probably better ways to do it, but that's just how I did it thinkin on my own.
